Hello. Just the other day, I have noticed a small lump that is located beside my vulva. I became very frightened because I have never seen anything similar to this.
It was a small lump, a bit painful when I touch it.
First I thought it was some swollen vein because it was kind of bluish.
And so I didn’t pay too much attention on it.
Until, one day, my friend told me that the reason of my lump can be some gland called Bartholin’s gland. I have never heard about this gland and I was wondering could this be the cause of my lump.
I am aware that I need to seek for medical help now but I’m afraid because I even suspect that some tumor could also be the reason of these kinds of changes.

Yes, you are right about one thing, not about the tumor, but the fact you should seek for medical help.
I doubt the reason of your lump could be tumor, because tumor is commonly localized in the vulva, not beside it.
A lump or swelling occurring at either side of the entrance to the vagina is most probably a Bartholin cyst. It is a swelling that is caused by a blocked gland.
The Bartholin glands are two large glades situated on either side of the vaginal openings. They are responsible for secreting lubricating fluid during sexual arousal.
You must remember one thing- Bartholin cysts and abscesses keep on recurring if not properly treated and only appropriate treatment is surgical drainage but sometimes total removal of the effected gland might be necessary.

I had a bartholins cyst marsupilized four years ago now, and it has left a large hole where it was and obviously is not going to heal over. I was told that there would be a tiny opening for the gland to permanently drain, but there shouldn't be a hole the size of my thumnail and as deep as my thumbnail should there??? It is a sometimes sore from the scarring but I am reluctant to ever have surgery there again as it could get worse instead of better. Has anyone had this surgery and had the same problem after???

Hi, I think I may have this, however my symptoms are quite different to what I have read. About 7 months ago I felt very uncomfortable below, very sensetive, burn when i urinate and a little uncomfortable when sitting, this was around the time of my period. I went Doc's said I have a urine infection, I was swabbed and did indeed have urine infection. 2 months later same thing and went back to Doc but no infection was detected. I left feeling very frustrated. Every month same thing, one month, I got a mirror and looked below and was horrified at what I saw a round cyst looking thing that looked as if it was blocking entrance to vagina. Just as well that I am single and not sexually active, that could have been quite embarrassing. Anyway, i have noticed I only feel this thing when i am on period. It disappears and then reappears. Went to docs this week who barely checked me and she said she could not see anything... well perhaps if you probed a little you would see it!!!!!! >:( aargh!!!!!! anyhoo she said come back when you are not on your period.......err hello... it only appears when I am on my period... >:( needless to say i left docs feeling very frustrated and in tears. I just want to know what it is. HELP!

I also suddenly noticed a swelling and after further medical investigation, discovered it is a Bartholin's cyst. Is it better to have it surgically drained or leave it to dissipate naturally and how long is that likely to take (naturally)? And does it recur less frequently if trated surgically?
