Asparagus belongs to the same family as garlic and onions. It is very healthy with very little calories. There are green and white asparagus.
On one side they are very low on calories but on the other very rich with minerals and vitamins-to mention some vitamin A, B vitamins and vitamin C. Asparagus is very rich in folic acid, vitamin B9 that is important for pregnant women and those who are thinking of becoming pregnant as it helps in proper development of the spine and brain of the fetus in the first few days and weeks of pregnancy.
Asparagus also contains fiber (good against constipation-if taken with a lot of fluids) and calcium (which is good for the bones).
Other important characteristics of asparagus are its detoxifying and diuretic effects. It contains a carbohydrate called inulin that is being digested by the “good bacteria” in our intestines and by increasing the levels of inulin, we increase the amunt of friendly bacteria that helps in our digestion.
Asparagus helps us remove excess water from our bodies and it contains the phytochemical glutathione. The glutathione is an antioxidant and oxidants are chemical substances that protect our cells from being damaged by the free radicals and it also has anticarcinogenic properties.
