I am not a fan of this genre. I think it has elements of gentle fiction/reality fiction. It is about a girl and her ascent to womanhood and all the trials and tribulations that come with that. It tells the story of her life and all the people who come into it. It is basically about human nature. About knowing horrible things, and having to decide whether or not 'tis best to keep them to yourself. It has elements of adultery, betrayal, family, friendship, spousal abuse, alcoholism.

The one positive is the author is Irish born, bred and educated and can weave an enchanting tale that keeps you reading despite not enjoying the pain you're reading about. She is a master storyteller.

Despite the bad things that happen throughout the book, you are left with a positive feeling that things are going to work out and that friendship and the love of others is what will see you through. It was odd to read such misery and still feel positive.

One of my marks of a good book or movie is one that makes me think deeply in the days following. This one definitely left me thinking.

This book was an enjoyable read, if somewhat difficult to take. It was emotionally wrenching at times. The characters are likable and some are just horrible, like in real life. It was well written and easy to understand--a tale beautifully told.

I read this book a few years ago. I thought it was ok at the time, but I honestly can't remember much about it now.

I liked this book, and although it was hard on the heart at times, glad it didn't have the traditional "happy" ending, because hey that's life.

I love Maeve Binchy though. I love the way the weaves the culture into her books and how she really brings the characters to life. Try and read some others (Tara Road wasn't my favorite, but I liked it). Circle of Friends is amazing (don't see the movie, it was a stinker especially after reading the book) and I also loved Evening Class. Copper Beech was good, too.

My favorite was Glass Lake....I believe the first one of hers I read. I've read so many that I get them mixed up.....but I believe I liked Echoes and Firefly Summer also.

I think it was Silver Wedding that was really slow moving and I'm not sure if I ever finished
