I broke the scaphoid bone in my right wrist. The initial XRays were inconclusive, so they put my wrist in a Velcro strapped splint and told me I would need an MRI. After the MRI they concluded it was broken, and put a cast on it. Today I had an appointment to have the cast looked at to make sure it was still in tact and fitting well. (I had the cast put on three weeks ago, but I wore the splint for 10-11 days before they put the cast on, so its been about 4.5 weeks since the injury)
I hate this thing so much, and I want it off. they said I would need the cast for 6 weeks, which will mean my right hand will be useless to me for about 7.5 weeks total which I don't know if I'm willing to deal with. I know that it is largely frowned upon to remove one's own cast, but this bone has been healing for 4.5 weeks now.
My intent is to remove the cast, and continue to wear the splint (which, if worn properly restricts my hand movement equally to the cast, the only difference being that it can be removed if needed.) This cast is driving me crazy, my hand is uncomfortable, itchy, and it looks stupid. I'm a 20 year old guy who works in a professional environment, and having an ugly cast attached to me 24/7 not only makes me extremely irritable, but it also draws unwanted attention, and It accents the already inconvenient fact of my youth, which is exactly the opposite of what I am going for.
I want to know if anyone thinks it would be a bad idea to remove this, and wear the splint in its place. my plan is to wear the splint as much as possible, because I do understand the risks involved here. I would wear it to sleep, and in my day to day life. I mostly just want the option to remove it if needed, and with care.
advice is appreciated, thanks
