Hey everyone. I am very concerned about my niece. She is 14 years old and she had her physical examination with her schoolmates yesterday. They told us that she has heart murmur and that we should not be worried. All we need to do is to control it.
But of course we are so worried and we started to read a lot about it on the internet.
My brother called me today and told me that they found a lot of “ugly” experiences online regarding heart murmurs.
I have just one question – can heart murmur be caused by a hole in the heart? Can this be the reason?

Good day. I am not sure that I understand your question very well. It is a little bit confusing but I will try to answer. There are two types of heart murmurs – an innocent and abnormal murmurs. In your case, the child has a murmur. A child with an innocent murmur has a normal heart and this is a type that is very common in newborns and children. Abnormal heart murmur is more serious and in children it is usually caused by congenital heart disease. I don’t know what murmur is in your niece's case but I really hope that it is innocent one. And this one can’t be caused by a hole in the heart.

Hey there.
I agree that your post is a little bit confusing but I do understand what you want to ask us. She is 14 years old, right? Kids in that age in the last couple of years are having a lot of problems with heart murmur. Now, the doctor needs to determine is this dangerous or not, what stage of murmur we are talking about.
Sometimes, if heart murmur is strong it can cause damage in the heart, so according to this it can cause a hole in the heart as well. Does she have any symptoms that she is complaining at?

Hi friends. Yes, now I can see that I was a little bit confusing but that is because she didn’t explained well to me what exactly she wants to know. She is concerned that this murmur can cause a hole in her heart. They went to see the doctor today and he told him that this is an “innocent” murmur. I didn’t know what this means until I saw that you are talking about it in the earlier posts.
Now my questions is – anyone here has experience with it and can this innocent murmur be caused by hole in the heart? What are the steps of the treatment?

Ok, let’s start from the beginning. I will try to explain what can cause heart murmur because you haven’t told us does she has hole in the heart or not.
Many heart murmurs usually are harmless and referred to as very innocent or functional as well. They are caused when blood just rushes through the heart very quickly during normal function wile no heart diseases may exit. There are so many medical conditions that can lead to an innocent murmur that she has, such as fever, anemia and hyperthyroidism.
Now, you need to check does she has any of those things.
