Actually for some people, locking your knees can make you feel faint or even pass out. It restricts the major artery in your legs, reducing blood flow to your brain. It depends on the shape of a person's knees.

Yes, you can indeed lose consciousness from locking your knees... if you've done for a couple minutes. Last year, while in band practice, we were called to attention, horns up, and after a couple of minutes, someone just dropped. Everybody was curious as to why and that's when my band director decided to announce that locking your knees will make you pass out. Bad timing huh? Your brain eventually gets deprived of oxygen and your human body response is to pass out and let your instincts take it away. Similar to holding your breath.

It varies on the person. It can take as little as ten minutes to as much as 30. To make it go as fast as possible, lock your knees but keep them relaxed. Don't make them tense or else it'll take longer. Also, you can daydream while doing it to make time go faster. Warning: Be careful where you pass out at! However, you might not fully pass out, like me. I just started feeling lighted-headed, almost as if I was in a dream. Next I started seeing stars and colors. Lastly, my vision completely faded and I saw red, but I didn't collapse. I think what happened was my instincts made me unlock my knees before I passed out.

yes, in fact you can pass out from locking your knees. it causes blood loss in the knees as well sas oxygen loss, resulting in unconciousness, today at school my ffriend got nervous and locked her knees and passed out, causing her to have to go to the hospital:(

Not passing out when locking your knees. I learned a very hard way locking your knees for extended periods of time was not a good idea. We were doing some Marching Band practice, it was in a CONCRETE parking deck. We were doing some exercises in place standing up. Well I knew something was wrong when my vision went blurry and I could barely hear anything. I started slapping my face to try and get me back in the world. Next thing I know I wake up laying down on the concrete with a splitting pain in the back of my head where apparently I had fallen. No memory of how I got to laying down obviosly. LOCKING KNEES IS BAD IF YOU PLAN TO STAND FOR A LONG TIME. I passed out and ended up with a head bashed into concrete and very sick feeling later on(Yes I made the mistake of standing right up and walking out of the group, I am stupid and should have lied down) Just don't do it. I am very fortunate I didn't hurt myself more than I did.

I just recently came across with this on the internet, but at least in the US this seems to be "common knowledge". Here in Finland I haven't heard this one before in school nor in the military. I tried to google this but found no compelling medical opinions about this, only speculation and lots of not so convincing "Yes it's true I've seen it happen" stories. The common theory seems to be that there is an artery or a vein that gets pinched by locking your knees.

What I HAVE heard in school, army and university physiology classes is that it is possible to faint when standing still for a long time because blood may get packed in the legs and cause reduced blood pressure in rest of the body including brain. Thats because for blood to get back up from the legs it needs muscle contractions which together with venous valves "pump" the blood back up from legs. Thats why what I've been told in school army etc. is to occasionally move legs or contract leg muscles when standing still for long time. Considering this I thought that even if the pinched vein theory would not be true it would still be possible that when locking your knees you could stand more "relaxed" (have reduced muscle activity in the legs) and thus cause you to faint more easily.

Theres also a common alternative theory that you should not lock your knees when standing still because if you faint you fall forward to your face instead of crumbling "gently" straight down on your ass. To me this sounds more convincing reason to why this would be told to people in schools and armed forces etc.

This would definitely be one for Mythbusters!

you CAN infact pass out from locking your knees. I was in JROTC today and we had just gotten done with promotions when one of our cadets stumbled. I thought oh someone bumped him or he was trying to shift his weight and lost balance, and the next thing i know my platoon leader was catching him and my company commander had yelled for our colonel and for everyone but certain people (the people you saw it happen) to go to their assigned class rooms... he had infact been LOCKING HIS KNEES!!!! So DO NOT WHAT SO EVER LOCK YOUR KNEES!!!!!

YES YOU CAN. many people have passed out in my NJROTC classes over the years. One guy locked his knees, passed out nd broke his nose, lost 2 teeth, a cracked brow nd had a concusion. that is why our instructors warn us REPEATEDLY not to lock our knees nd keep them slighty bent. they dont just say it for their health, its for YOURS

I have passed out before during one of my concerts. My teachers said it was bcuz of me locking my knees. I don't think that was a big part of the problem bcuz it was really hot. I wanna join choir, but I'm afraid I'll pass out again on the risers.........what do I do???

There is a difference between having your knees locked completely and having your knees straight. Duh nobody just stands there with their knees bent! It looks weird and would be rather uncomfortable!
