I know that most health magazines have articles once in a while that talk about how everyone should drink at least two litres of water a day. This is often linked to staying healthy as well as thin. But my question is whether it is possible to drink too much water at all? If so, how much is too much? And what can happen to those who drink too much?

Yes, there is such a thing as water poisoning or water intoxication. Before this happens, enormous quantities of water would have to be consumed and this is not something you need to worry about doing to yourself at all. Water poisoning can be fatal, but it normally happens in "water drinking competitions", which you should not be taking place in. Risk factors also include endurance sports, malnutrition, or some medical conditions.

Ransell105 is right.

Water intoxication happens because the enormous amounts of water you consume dilute your electrolytes, which send signals along your nerves to and from your brain. If you dilute these electrolytes, your brain cannot send signals to the rest of your body. Your heart will shut down, your lungs will shut down, and eventually, your brain. It is lethal if it is not treated immediately. In most cases however, the time between organ failure, and calling for help, help arrives, they get you to a hospital, and the water is pumped from your system, you're usually dead.

Also, Ransell105 is right in that it happens most often in drinking competitions which have been banned in most countries because of said water poisoning.

Oh, and to answer your first question, most nutritionists say that you don't even need two litres to stay stay healthy :-)

Around 3 gallons would most likely give you water poisoning but that's around ten litres, which NO ONE drinks, unless they're nuts. :-)

LOL.....i totally agree with Immy....water is essential....and as any human being is aware off....we have to drink at least 8 glasses of water....
if u pay more attention to what I've written....you'll see that i said "AT LEAST 8 glasses "...that is a minimum of 8 glasses a day...hence signifies that u can drink as much as u want....especially if your an athlete....it is good if u drink a lot of water..

i rest my case :-D
