If you find yourself very thirsty, it could be due to the medicine (if any) you are taking. Check out the side effects. Excessive thirst could also be a sign of diabetes. Too much water can dilute your electrolytes and result in heart irregularities and even coma. However, you would have to deliberately consume vast quantities of water for this to occur.

Nobody seems to know where that "8 glasses of water" myth got started but it just ain't so. Your body lets you know when you're thirsty.

Yes it is an upper limit, but you should stop drinking way before you reach it.

Human kidneys cannot excrete more than 14-20 liters water per day (varies individually), so unless you sweat, any amount of water about this limit will temporarily stay in your body and dilute your blood - your blood sodium level will fall (hyponatremia). This is called water intoxication and can be deadly.

Much more important than daily limit is an hourly limit. Kidneys can excrete about 0.6-1 liter water per hour. They were reports of deaths due to water intoxication in marathon runners who drank more water than needed. One woman died while trying to lose weight by excessive water drinking. She was drinking a lot of water for about a week and eating very little food (and hence salt). One day she drank about 4 liters water in about two hours - she got confused and later died in a hospital.

On the other hand, in a hot weather, especially when working you can lose more than 5 liters water by sweating (actually much more in tropics...). 5 liters of lost water means 5 kilos (11 pounds) of lost weight. In this case you have to drink, but again, not more than about one liter per hour.
