I am a soccer player, 27 years of age. I am not in some major league, but still make a good living of it. Anyway, my teammate got hurt during our last match, and after examination doctors said that he has sustained cartilage injury in his knee. It seems like a very serious injury, since he will be out from the field for at least a month. Why is this cartilage injury so dangerous?

Cartilage (hyaline or articular) is material made of collagen (type of protein). It covers surfaces of bones that come in the contact with other bones (we talk of joints here). So, it is extremely important that this cartilage always remain intact and undamaged. Otherwise, joint bones can get damaged really quickly. You should also know that this condition takes a lot of time to heal.
