My mother is 67 years old and it looks like that she has been struggling with all sorts of illnesses her whole life. Hypothyroidism is the latest and this one is not easy at all. Especially because cataract came too. Could that cataract be associated w/hypothyroidism? Are those related? Will meds for hypothyroidism help with cataract too?

Hmm, I think that is not possible. I mean, cataract, once it happens and settles on the eye, no meds can help, only surgery. So, meds for thyroid issues are for thyroid gland only and nothing else. As for cataract, surgery will help your mother see well again. Although, it is not so common for a woman to get affected with this condition.

I guess that is due to thyroid problems. And not just that, some other illnesses help induce cataract. It is not an uncommon problem in people that suffer from diabetes for years. Even some meds are responsible for cataract, like corticosteroids. As for surgery itself, there are two basic types, where the difference is based on removing or not removing the entire lens.

I think that in cataract situation, it might be better to replace the lens completely and put artificial ones. Quite often, if the lens is not removed, in the post op period, cataract might strike again and YAG procedure has to be executed one which creates a hole in the lens center. This enables the light to enter the eyes which is important for image production and regular eyesight.
