I to have salty taste in my mouth. This time it's been 2 weeks and counting. Last time six months or so ago, same thing and lasted a couple months. I have problems swallowing (severe pain at level of diaphram as food trys to pass to stomach). Also have pancreatitis from gall bladder disease. as soon as I use a glass I can't use same glass again as the salty taste passes to glass and other dishes. I to have dry moutn a lot and use product dentist recommended called Biotene, made for dry mouth so I don't think it's dry mouth but more related to my stomach issue.

I too have this salty taste and I was beginning to think it was in my head or that I was putting too much salt in my food...but then I remembered I don't add salt to my food !!!
I have an incredible thirst because of the salty taste. I had my gall bladder removed 12 weeks ago. I had lots and lots of gall stones.. Took severe sore throat about 3 weeks ago, had teary right eye for months too.....Many of the same symptoms that others seem to have had.
I see my doctor on Thursday of this week for pain where my gall bladder used to be so I'll ask him about this taste and will post back what he says.
Has anyone had a sensible response to this problem from the medical profession?

Wow! I have a salty taste coming from an upper rear molar. I can taste it originates between the two back molars. I know it is not in my head. I head a root canal in one of them. I drink a ton of coffee at lest 4 cups a day.
I wonder if my sinus cavity is also draining through the tooth?

I wrote on 12/13/2007. Talked with a very reputable eye doctor and he is checking for a blocked tear duct in my right eye. Tears are salty tasting and this well may be draining into my throat. My right eye is now tearing. There just may be a connection. Good Luck To All.

Wow...I am shocked at how many other people are going through this same thing. I have been trying to find out the connection between my salty mouth and some other thing. I first started the salty taste in my mouth in January, 2007, a few months after yet-another rigorous diet. After 20# lost, I got sharp pains in my stomach and salty taste. Went to doctor thinking kidney problem. He diagnosed gallbladder, and after tests, was right! They were so filled with stones, it had to be removed. I asked gallbladder doc about salty taste...if it was connected...and he was "stumped" (don't you hate hearing that from a doctor). I finally got back to normal eating, no more dieting, and salty taste went away. In September, I got watery eyes. The eyes got so bad that my eyes were almost puffed shut. ENT wanted to just put me on prednisone, to reduce swelling, but wasn't really interested in pursuing the root cause. I never returned to him, since I didn't want to go on prednisone. The other meds seemed to work, very slowly, but it did sort of go away. I still am plagued by watery eyes, now and then, especially in wind or place with ceiling fans, but not to the extent it was. Family doc thought maybe I'd had a bad, isolated allergic reaction event, that would go away in winter, and it did, for the most part. But, here it is, January 2008, and I'm dieting, again, and here's the salty taste. I am off caffeine, thinking it was too much of a strain on my kidneys to have to process caffeine, and maybe all the fat that has to leave the system, that blew out my kidney last year. I hear a lot of dieters lose their gallbladder, b/c it's too much strain, with the fat all filtering through it. I have even wondered about if I have "dry eye" AND "dry mouth" and since it's all in the head, couldn't it be related? I have wondered about a possible tear duct being blocked!!! And your post has mentioned it, so maybe I have something very simple, and not some scary vague disease of the kidneys (though my mom had nephrytis as a kid, so I think about that). Thanks for any more postings. Glad to know I'm not alone.

When I read your post, I couldn't believe how exactly it described my mum's problem. She also has the taste only on the left side of her mouth, and she says it tastes like licorice to her. However, so far she has had no luck in figuring out what is wrong, or in getting anyone to really take her seriously, but she has been suffering with it for several months now, and it just gets worse. I am desperate to help her any way I can, so I am hoping that you can help me. Did you ever get your results? Please reply and let me know what happened in your case. I and my mum, would be very grateful. :)

I posted a reply, and a plea, to Mette already, but I thought I would make a separate post as well on the same subject, as I am desperate to find some answers.
As I mentioned in my other post, my mum is experiencing an unpleasant licorice taste in the left side of her mouth, and she has been suffering from it for several months. She also has a severe twitch in her left eye and down the left side of her face, which she has had for over 10 years now. She has seen a specialist about the twitch, and it has been determined that it is a hemifacial spasm, the main treatment for which is Botox injections that so far she has not had. Anyway, it now seems as though there is some connection between the bad taste in her mouth and her eye twitch: firstly, they are both on the same side of her face; and secondly, they both come and go, or increase and decrease in severity, at the same time. That is to say, when her eye is bad, so is the taste in her mouth; but last week, she had several days when her eye was much better, and so was the bad taste. She only recently made the connection, and it seems to make no sense really, so she hasn't seen a doctor about it yet (although she is going to try to see a dentist now). And indeed, it seems strange to me too: how can these things really be connected, especially when the onset of each symptom was separated by more than a decade? I am hoping that someone here may have had a similar experience, or know something about this. I spoke to my mum today, and her eye and mouth were so bad, that it was really getting her down, so I am desperate to help her. I live in Colorado, in the States, whereas she lives in England, so I cannot be there physically to help her; all I can do is try to find information for her. Anything anyone can share on this subject would be very much appreciated.

I posted previously; cancer survivor, gall bladder removed, teary eye. I have seen a number of docs and they are bemused. I see a GI specialist and an internist in the next week. I almost wish I could be a patient of HOUSE like doc if it means a solution. It is now Feb and this started at beginning of Oct. It is 24/7. At times the salty can taste almost sweet. But majority of the time it's salty. At night, salty leads to more saliva, and makes it almost impossible to sleep. Am going to be as assertive as possible with docs. Am convinced that unless they think you are in pain, they take the least proactive measure. Changed docs after original post as last one simply wanted me to take Zantac, claiming it was likely acid reflux. I searched the internet, and one doc got back to me after he too searched the interenet. He had no answer but his internet info, which echoed my search results, netted him a heck of a payday!! By the way, Zantac did not work and I stopped. I want a solution not a mask.
I am not buying the stress suggestion as I have had ovarian cancer 2xs and nothing like this happened during that period in hell. If gall bladder removal and the ER trip after for remaining stones are to blame, then I need to know that. Drinking water does not help. I still have soups quite a bit b/c interest in food has changed drastically---what is the point if it all tastes like salt.
Located in Colorado if we are all trying to figure out whether geography plays any part. Keep posting any news you all get---and notice specifics. There must be a thread we all share. I am 49. Healthy lifestyle and diet. Big joke is I never get a cold---only the other C--cancer.
Information is power. Will let you know what the docs say.

My salty lips problem started about seven weeks ago. I went to my doctor immediately, and was diagnosed with Mononucleosis (and still have it). I'm hoping the salty taste goes away with the monow, because it's driving me nuts!

My salty mouth started about a week ago and at first i just ignored it, but now it is getting on my nerves! I looked it up and it seems that the jury is out on what it could be, but i can elimate a few suggestions. I know im not preggo as I am male! ha! I don't drink coffee or smoke and hardly drink any pop, so i dont think thats it. I highly doubt i got acid reflux.
The ONLY thing that is different in the past week or so is that I started taking CLA to help tone up en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conjugated_linoleic_acid and I am thinking that maybe it is lowering sugar levels and giving the impression that things taste more salty...i have no idea!
Anyone ever use CLA and have a suggestion?!

I just started getting the salty taste in my mouth this past weekend. It's driving me nuts!! I just recently started drinking "recovery drinks" after my workouts at the gym. they had an additive - Burn Fat Burn (included CLA) - I believe this is what caused the initial problem as I always had an odd taste in my mouth after I drank them - but now it won't go away!!
I'm hoping that the taste will go away soon since my last "recovery drink" was Saturday morning.
