It takes 3 - 4 months to totally heal. Each week gets better. I saw the most improvement from the "discharge" around week 8. I found ibuprofen to help the most with pain. I made sure to take it and give it time to start working before using the bathroom. Sitting in the tub afterwards also helped with my healing. Hope this helps you some!!

I'm going on 5 months still not healed. Discharge has stopped. But now randomly I will go to wipe after using bathroom and is all blood. Still sore...still can feel it in the sphincter. Still do sitz baths(they do t really help anymore tho) 1 week after operation I developed things that looked like Little hemorrhoids. Doctor said it was the way he sewed me. Then he said they were skin tags and they weren't worth removing(even tho I just payed thousands already!) I can't understand why a wound won't heal after months and doctors don't help. I seem to be at a stalemate with the healing process. I'm worse off now then I was before the surgery. wish you good luck...

I had my surgery 9/11/15. I was left with a great deal of skin tags from my original stitches. I had half of them removed the beginning of December. The doctor numbed me up, cut them off and then stitched the areas closed. The worst part was the numbing. It was pretty sore the first 4 days but really no big deal as long as I kept up with ibuprofen. The stitches fell out at 5 weeks. I go back tomorrow to have the rest removed. My Dr seemed very surprised that I want to continue with removing the tags. The way I look at it, we have gone this far, why stop now? I strongly suggest that you push your dr to remove them.

I have found that 400 mg of Magnesium daily has helped with bowels. I am almost three months out from surgery and still have pain when going to the bathroom but at least my bowels are moving although not the right size it should be.

If you can go without surgery please by all means do!! OMG!! This pain never goes away! It's been a week since my surgery, and almost every minute is pain. Tried sitting up 2 days ago for a half hour, haven't been able to since. It's been 7 days of excruciating pain. Everything I read, and even the doctor says it may be another week or two before the pain lets up.

It WILL get better. I had the full works which was awful at the time, but when it heals you will be so glad to be rid of the constant pain you had before the op. Keep your food, fluids and stool softeners going. Painkillers were a must have..I had Tramadol initially, but 2 paracetamol, then 2 Ibuprofen 2 hours later , on a rotation should help get on top of the pain.

Thanks for your reply. I am scheduled next month, ticking off the days and scared out of my wits. All the negative posts make me want to change my mind. The odd positive one keeps on track.

I am now 8 months out from mine. Absolutely life changing. Couldn't be happier. The Internet is full of negativity regarding it. The negativity caused me to postpone my surgery 5 months. Don't let the negative comments fill you with fear. Those that had positive experiences are probably just out enjoying a better quality of life.

Did you have internals and externals? I'm having the left column removed as I have both types on the one side. I've been to see surgeons 2 different times in the past. One who scared me badly when she said on a pain scale of 1-10 this surgery is a 12. I was terrified. I wished that I had of been braver in the past and I'd be recovered by now with it behind me. I don't want to back out and have a flare up and think if I just have had the surgery when it was scheduled.

Even my own Doctor held back on a referal because of what other people had said, but I just could not go on as I was..so glad I insisted. Make sure you have enough time off work too . I had surgery where I was stiched inside and out because it was complex , but my life has changed drastically for the better.
You will be ok and make sure you are well stocked up on all the meds, softeners and the right food before hand. It takes a while to heal. After every 'bowel movement' I would step in the shower and just place the shower head where the sun don't shine. That helped ease the pain too. No soap as that will do no good...just warm water for as long as it takes for relief to set in. Good luck and if you want anymore tips/support I will look out for you :)

I had internals and externals so everything was removed. Best thing I ever did. That was almost 2 years ago. I won't pretend that the pain is bad, but the constant pain I was in prior to surgery is no longer there. And my confidence is back too.

Thanks again for the support. I'm also nervous about all the posts about continued leakage as well. I'm hoping this subsides quickly. My family doctor said there is a risk of incontinence but my surgeon said he has not had a case in which this had happened. so much to think about. I've invested so much into this mentally, many, many months, that I feel if I back out of surgery it will all have been for nothing. I've read hundreds of posts and think I have a pretty good idea of things I need for after the surgery.

I am now at 2 months and I am still sore, but I don't have the severity many of these other people are talking about. I know I don't have fissures or other hemorrhoids, and as I sit here things really aren't that bad. It's just still sore, and the soreness is felt where my hemorrhoids were felt (bottom of buttox/upper thigh). As people look for answers I see that rarely do the good results give any detailed time frame. I'm curious if, with your good results, you felt you were still recovering after a few months, or were you like new at the standard 4 week mark that doctors give?
