My childhood was not a very happy one. We suffered from different kinds of abuse, had an alcoholic mother and a continuous stream of "new step fathers". Our mom used to be me and my brother as well. I am wondering if this is the reason my brother now suffers from schizophrenia? Can abuse lead to schizophrenia?

I do think that there is a big connection between what happens during our formative years, and any mental illnesses we end up with later on in life. There is no direct proven link between schizophrenia and childhood abuse though, and it seems that many people turn out as very functional and successful people, despite having suffered abuse in childhood.
