my dr told me to sleep at an angle. put something under the head of the bed so the acid in tummy will stay in the tummy. i have tried this and it helps a little. maybe it will help someone else.

Wow. I can't believe I found this thread. I've had this issue since last July. I remember exactly when it started. It literally almost happened over night and my life changed since then.
I was at the gym (trufit) with my gym buddy and after one of my exercises, I started getting this funky sensation in my throat. I couldn't quite tell what it was. All I remember feeling was that I needed water. The next day I went back into the gym and the feeling was much more apparent. I thought I needed to vomit at first, but then I noticed that there was a scratchy sensation (almost a sharp tickle) in the back of my throat that was immediately followed by a gag reflex. I thought I had eaten something that might have gotten stuck in my throat. I didn't know what to do. A week later, talking and inhaling started triggering my gag reflex. About 2 months go by and the feeling has worsened. Not by much, but definitely to a noticeable degree. I finally went to my doctor, and he said the same thing a lot of people in this thread have claimed. Acid Reflux. I did my own research on this for a while and I couldn't quite understand how Acid Reflux could dry out my throat to the point of gagging from basic things like freakin breathing & talking!
About 6 months go by and nothing's changed. I've found workarounds for it. Eating helps, drinking constant liquids help. I'm still as physically active as I can be. Before my dry throat issue, I was a very active individual. I am a swing dancer after all, and in just 2 days my life changed and there are days where I cry because I can't believe what has happened to me. I thought I was the only one who had this issue but after finding this thread. There is a glimmer of hope to finding an answer.
To finish up my story, I just got my tonsils removed last Wednesday. My Doctor advised against it because he didn't believe my tonsils were the issue. I also didn't think they were the major problem but I was hoping it would fix something. I at least wanted to eliminate it as an option. They were pretty big to begin with so I was completely fine with removing them. After my tonsillectomy, my saliva got really thick which caused my dry sensation to worsen. I've realized that it's the soft palate that is triggering my gag reflex. Almost a similar feeling to that after you snore all night and wake up with a dry throat.
The only thing that I've put into my body in the last year and a half was the pfizer vaccination. I had my vaccine in May of last year and I my 2nd dose was in June. Could it be that this is a side effect from the vaccine? Maybe, but I have yet to look into the details on the pfizer's side effects.
I will continue to follow your comment & this thread in hopes for some answers.

This dry throat coughing goes back WAY further than the vaccines for me. It has been at least ten years.
I can’t even recall exactly when it started. I cannot go anywhere without a water bottle (water doesn’t always help too much, but I can’t drink pop and juice all day. Tea makes me thirsty). Sometimes it’s just stepping outside that triggers it (dry winter air is bad for me in Canada), sometimes it’s a cold, and mostly, it’s entirely random. I had to ditch the Covid mask at work because it was drying out my throat so badly and I couldn’t risk a classroom full of students witnessing an event! That really frustrates me.
Once it starts, it’s water, cough candy, and real mental strength to stop it. I think that’s why I haven’t gone to a doctor about it…I fear I’ll be told that it’s all in my head. As someone said before, even thinking about gagging makes me gag.

Omg I've been dealing with issue for years. I can't leave the house without water or some type of beverage and mints. Gum can help too I've found but only while it still has flavor, once it loses the flavor it makes the gag worse. I've mentioned it to a few doctors but it always gets brushed off. I recently had my thyroid tested and all looks good there. Not really sure what to do next. This has controlled my like for so long. I always look at people walking around with no liquids or anything and wonder why that can't be me. In my line of work it would be beneficial to get scuba certified but I feel there's no way I'd be able to do that. I'd probably die if I started gagging under water. Anyway it's a relief to see I'm not the only one suffering from this, but from reading all these posts it seems that nobody here has found an actual solution. Anybody have any update? Wishing the best for all of you.

It's good that you've had your thyroid tested and ruled out any thyroid issues. Other possible causes of dry throat and gagging can include acid reflux, allergies, dehydration, anxiety, and certain medications.
You may want to ask for a referral to a specialist such as an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor) or a gastroenterologist (digestive system doctor) who can provide a more targeted evaluation and treatment.
In the meantime, continue to stay hydrated and avoid any triggers that may exacerbate your symptoms. Chewing sugarless gum or sucking on hard candy can help promote saliva production and alleviate dry mouth symptoms. Also, practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation may help alleviate anxiety-related symptoms.
