Hi, I'm 32 years old and have always had an asymmetrical face. I never let it bother me really except now after getting my braces off the asymmetry seems to look worse. Or maybe it's looking worse because I'm getting older and plus I've recently began dropping some weight. I saw myself on a video recently and was horrified because that's not what I see in pictures or the mirror. I always knew I was asymmetrical but never thought it was that bad. I thought having braces would even my face out but it only straightened my teeth- not my jaw. I have a consultation on Tuesday to see about corrective jaw surgery. My orthodontist suggested it to me before but I declined thinking I didn't need it that bad, but the past few days I've been obsessing over it ever since seeing myself on videos. It sucks that I am even worrying about this...

because I don't worry about what other people look like. I actually think imperfections in people are endearing... But I just want to live my life the happiest as possible. Happiness comes from within, no matter the external circumstances, though. I mean look at Michael Jackson(RIP) he totally ruined his face thinking it was never good enough. We should all try to be happy and be thankful that we even have a face. Lol.

I don't think your understand trying to fix noticeable flaws. Of course, there's always someone in a worse situation, but when you walk into a room and read peoples body languages (constantly rubbing their eye), listen to the remarks (look at that guys eyebrow/face), every single time you enter a public area it is a cause for concern. People do notice and it's worth fixing. The emotional distress of going from kindergarden through college, where kids are immature- constantly the butt end of jokes and the social isolation... it's cause for concern and efforts, even if only maybe possible, a fix.

I've got similar issues; always slept on my right side in a twist while growing up.. While sleeping your body grows and when you're laying in a certain position it grows along those curves.

Some things I'd like to share with dealing with the superficial issues:

First of all I noticed that the asymmetry found at my body (mainly the lower left part of my ribs) gets less noticeable when you lower your fat%. Due to the twist fat tends to be less equally divided when your standing up strait; thus lowering your overall fat% takes away some of the overall asymmetrical look. Combined with some specific muscle training with weights you can alter an area like this A LOT. Don't expect it to ever become flawless, but I've gotten to a point at which I'm actually proud of that part of my body again.

Watch out with lowering your fat% too much though. An asymmetrical face doesn't benefit from going below a certain fat%. From my experience I can say you can safely drop to a % people would consider very low, but at a certain point lines in your face tend to get too sharp which could increase your awareness of the asymmetry. So if you're going to try this don't overdo it and focus on finding a balance which suits you.

And concerning face asymmetry: it's quite a taboo in the bodybuilding community, but it's actually pretty easy to train your jaw muscles. Chewing gum is one way to go, but if you really want big results you can do what I do: lay on your back on a bed or something with your head just over the edge, lean backwards so your head gets upside down, place some weights on your jaw (with a towel or something between it) and start opening and closing your mouth. Keep in mind I'm not sure if this training method is doable for every asymmetrical jaw, but the muscle itself gets bigger quite quickly. I don't believe we've got other muscles in our face you can actually train; you could maybe train the jaw the other way around someway but that might cause dental problems? But anyway; you can achieve quite a lot with just this 1 training method.

Furthermore I'd like to share that you should never let working on stuff like this dominate your life. Working on your fat% and muscles is a hell of an assignment for people who aren't used to it, so there's the realistic risk you'll be spending more time and energy on your appearance then you'd actually benefit from. The best thing to do to overcome issues with appearance is to boost your confidence by doing things that make you happy/proud which have nothing to do with appearance. Working on your issues could be important, but living a life is what's actually going to make you happy if you let yourself.

By looking every day for years, we've developed a mental picture of ourselves from the mirror. So when we see a photo, it makes the asymmetries in our face seem way more extreme than they are. Can you guess why? It's because a mirror actually flips our likeness (a "mirror image") so we've gotten used to seeing our asymmetries backwards from how they are.

For example, my nose curves to the right of my face. In the mirror, I'm used to seeing it curve that way and don't notice it much at all. But when I look at a photo, suddenly it seems my nose is curving the opposite direction, and it stands out like a sore thumb because it's the opposite of what I usually see in the mirror - my internal image of myself. This effect is such a surprise to your mind that for some people, you might think your whole face looks totally different! But try to remind yourself that this makes you look worse in your own mind because of this effect ... To other people you don't look that asymmetrical!

I was looking in the mirror one day and realized the right side of my face is a smaller version of the right, with the eye being slightly lower also. It only recently started bothering me about a year after I figured it out. I'm almost 18 and I've been considering asking my dad for a facial implant for my birthday to even my face out but I'm afraid he'll get mad at me for wanting to alter my face which he and my mother say is so "beautiful." I feel only my left side is beautiful and I wish so much that the right size matched. I think it has started to bother me more lately because I've lost so much weight that it's become pretty noticeable to me every time I look in the mirror. I haven't really expressed to anyone how much this feeling of incompleteness hurts me. It literally looks like I'm missing about 5% of my face on the right. If someone, anyone could please reach out to me if you have anything helpful to say it would really be appreciated. None of you guys are alone cuz I totally understand what everyone who's already commented is going through because it's happening to me now

Idk how far back you posted this, but I felt the need to answer this because I wondered the same thing for a while. I also look better in the mirror and the asymmetry definitely is not as noticeable as in pictures. I stumbled upon the answer to this question in my high school psychology class. When you look in the mirror it is not the same image you would see if you were actually looking at your face(which is the same image you see through a camera). This is because the mirror is showing kind of a reversed image of your face/head. And in both of our cases, it seems that the messed up image produced by the mirror causes the asymmetry to look less.

Seeing everybodys comments on what there going threw it feels good not to be the only one but yeah only if we just didn't :( (I have the same problem my right side of my face is way smaller than my left side and what makes it more noticeable is I have a small dark spot by my lip makes it look like a fresh bruise) and like mostly everybody else who has posted... the smaller side is my right side of my face and the left is the fatter looking side... i started noticing it when I was about 14 barley noticeable but as the years went by it started getting worse (I'm 18 now) and you guys talking about chewing and what not I realized I chew more on the fatter side... (I'm going to Chew more on my right side see if that helps a bit) also i tend not to chew alot on my ride side because i feel like I'm biting the inside wall of my cheek

I also have same problem as my face is asymmetric... But there is a solution for this disorder.... Craniofacial surgery.. If you are willing to do it... It will correct your face fully normal...

Best regards

I have the same problem. My right and left are asymmetrical enough to where people will make fun, saying I have an "ugly side." Try using pillows to control the way you sleep. Use a huge body pillow under your knees which will prevent you from sleeping on either side and keep you on your back. Also, pillows under the arms help. I'm not sure how long it will take for the symmetry to correct but give it a shot. Good luck!
