Nope, you are not imagining it. Hydrocortisone is another name for cortisol, the fight or flight hormone that is produced naturally in your adrenal gland. Yes, it helps fight inflammation, so injections can alleviate pain. But it also does the same thing in injection form that normally produced cortisol does. It prepares the body to fight stress. Two of the first things it does is to increase blood flow and increase the supply of energy producing "fuel." Increased blood flow means the heart pumps faster and harder, thus increased blood pressure. This is a good thing in emergencies, but not a good idea for long term. As to increased fuel, that fuel is glucose. So, in addition to increased blood pressure you will most probably see an increase in blood glucose. Unless you have some underlying heart or diabetes problems, I wouldn't worry terribly about a temporary increase, Next time you get angry or upset about something, check your BP! Good chance it will be higher than normal. It's a natural body function.

They "poo poo" the idea because they get a kickback for peddling poison.

I had the same thing happened to me I had a cortisone shot put in each knee an hour and a half later I had a appointment with my medical doctor for med refills. The nurse checking me in took my blood pressure and it was high the doctor said your blood pressure is up and I said well I don't have high blood pressure which she already knew that. So I told her that I had been to the orthopedic doctor and had to injections of the cortisone steroids and she said that's probably what done it so she had me keep a watch on it so even after a month it's still running high and she had to give me some medicine. I've had these injections before so I'm not sure why it made it go up now

I had a cortisone shot in my knee about 5 weeks ago. The next morning I felt weird sort of tight in the chest radiating down through both arms full in the neck area and heart beet sporadic up and down. I have been previously diagnosed with high blood pressure and have been treating it with medication without any problems prior to this. Then the cortisone shot. I checked my blood pressure the morning after feeling weird and it was through the roof. This has continued for nine days every morning. I called the Orthopedic Dr. and they say it has nothing to do with the cortisone shot and I should contact my primary care doctor. Primary care doctor claims same thing, it's not associated with the shot.I am continually having issues with high blood pressure ever since getting the cortisone shot. Primary Dr. also says in the morning is not a good time to check your blood pressure. WHAT ? I thought. that's when my chest is pounding. Why wouldn't I check it then. I will be seeing a new Dr.I guess.

I use amlodipine for multiple beats. Just about every day I was woozy around 10:30 and it lasted for a few seconds. It took a halter monitor going four days to identify the problem. Now I take a 10mg once a day but started with 5mg

Took cortisone shot for "strep"'along with antibiotic shot and 2 hours later my heart was pounding super hard. My blood pressure was up! (130/94 rate:134) .. that made me even more nervous I was tempted to head to ER... thank you all for posting. I NOW am convinced it was the cortisone shot. Now just to try to sleep and have this get out of my system ASAP. I would've rathered deal w my throat pain than this.

I was given a dexamethasone steroid patch for plantar fasciitis on foot, my BP went up to 143/93 immediately, (like within 5 seconds) after 3-5 minutes took patch off and cleaned foot... it topped at 155/104... it WAS the patch. I couldn't leave for 2 1/2 hours, my husband picked me up.

I know these posts are a year or more old but reading them compels me to tell my story. The first time I got sent for cortisone shots I asked the specialist if there were any side effects. He said no. Why say no when they know there are. First my face was flushed and red and hot for two days, I get bad spasms in my back for a couple weeks after my shots. At one point I got these blotches on my arm and back and it took seeing two doctors before learning it was shingles brought on by the cortisone and evertime I get cortisone I get thrush on my tongue which is really annoying. Cortisone causes me to not be able to sleep for the first few nights after each shot. I was recently put on Dexedrine for chronic fatigue which has shot my normal blood pressure into the danger zone and my doctors knew I was going for cortisone shots in the last few weeks and nobody mentioned cortisone raises blood pressure. I was feeling really weird in my head after the second shot so I went to the pharmacy across from where I got the shot and it was the pharmacist that told me cortisone shots raise blood pressure. I’ve been getting these shots for about five years now and nobody ever mentioned this. Also nobody ever told me to eat a good meal before the shots and I was on a diet a few years back and got cortisone without eating and it dropped my normal blood sugar so low I couldn’t even talk properly. I had to stay for an hour on a stretcher drinking fruit juice and eating fruit juice till I felt better. Lesson learned. Doctors know to do blood work and write prescriptions but not enough to know the side effects of what they give you. A nurse will know . A pharmacist will know and an ambulance attendant will know. Too bad we just can’t see them. I hope this helps someone. We need to be aware of the risks for meds and procedures and research them well first before going ahead with them

I had a steroid injection in one knee two weeks ago, within 8 hours my BP went from 117/77 in the morning to 195/98 in the evening with a Mirgraine, which has been off and on for two weeks. Doctors should warn people. Also appetite loss.

I had the cortisone shots a little over a week ago. My bp shot up to 223/120. It took a week and four days to bring it back down. I still have the nausea, dizziness, lightheaded, and it feels like pressure in the back of my head.
