Hickups lasted 5 days after a spinal cortesone shot 20 years ago. Three elbow shots caused none. Got a shot in my shoulder yesterday , and had hickups since!

Actually this is what I was looking for. I just had a cortizone shot 2 days ago and I started to get hiccups. I have a cronic reflux disorder as well, so the hiccups is really giving me problems. Just though I'd pass this on.

EVERY Time I get a cortisone shot, I get the hiccups. I got a shot in the shoulder yesterday, and within 4 hours they started. Today, they are worse. I tried all the common tricks to stop them: sugar, lemon, hold breath, drink 8 oz of H2O non stop, breathe into a bag--NO LONG TERM HELP.
ANY suggestions???

I was prescribed cortisone tablets in 1982 and given a cortisone shot just this week (9/23/08) and almost immediately developed hiccups. In 1982, they stopped as soon as I quit taking the tablets; from the shot on 9/23/08, I am still hiccuping today (9/26). Both occasions, each doctor claimed to have never heard of such a reaction.

I went online to find side effects of Cortisone Shots for my husband. He got his first shot Tues., and wondered if swelling was side effect. He got a shot in the bottom of his heel and the side of his foot, on the same foot, and both legs have been swelling noticeably daily.
I was reading these posts to him about the hiccups, and he said he had the hiccups Wed. & Thur. at work, but did not connect it to the shot. If the doctors are saying this is not connected, they need to read these posts. (lol)
One thing I noticed after my husband got the shot was for several mornings he talked constantly when we first got up. It drove me nuts. On several ocassions, I had to ask him to please be quiet for a few minutes. I know that's terrible, but he would not stop talking. It is not like him to talk that much. I guess the drs. would probably say that was not connected either. (lol)

I appreciate finding this string of comments confirming what I thought. I got a cortisone shot in my shoulder yesterday. Today I have had hiccups on and off all day. I rarely get hiccups and never get them when they run an entire day. I was also wide awake at 5:30 am which is extremely rare for me and I was slightly hyperactive all day. Hopefully the hiccups will go away soon!

I got cortisone injection in my left shoulder yesterday at 10AM. After 10-15 minutes after the shot my eyes were full of tears, because of pain and very uncomforted feelings. Same night I had a nice dinner at 7PM, and since 9PM I had not only severe hiccups, I've never had in my life, but also heartburning, diarrhea, shaking (cold feeling) in conjunction with stomach pain.
I tried to drink water with Aloe Vera Juice (helping), sparkling water (not helping), and milk (not sure) - nothing seems to work to stop these horrible hiccups.
I stayed awake until 3AM and got some sleep only 2 hours between 3-5AM. After 5AM was the same story: hiccups, "stomach flu" diarrhea and shaking.
I did not expect side effects at all and they caught me unguarded.
Thanks to all of yours advises how to stop them, but it is looks like I have to co thru them and they will stop eventually. Special thanks for ice-cream advise!

Same for me. Hiccups for the past 48 hours after the shot in my shoulder. Over the past 12 hours they have slowed. Not a side effect that was expected.

Yep. I almost never get hiccups. When I do, they tyically last 10-15 minutes and then are gone. I have had maybe 6 cortisone shots in my life. On 3 of those occasions, the next day, I get bad hiccups that went off and on all day. They were easily the worst hiccups I've ever had. I got a cortisone shot yesterday and today has been one of those days. When I asked my doctor about this several years ago, he gave me one of those you must be crazy looks. But, the correlation is too strong for it not to be the cause. I glad from what I see here that I am not the only one. We are not crazy after all.

I had cartisone shot on my right shoulder yesterday and as others, hiccups started for me after a day and it is going on the fourth time.
Every half an hour of hiccups and half hour ok so far.
I dont remember when I had hiccups last but this is funny, bad and embarassing.
My doctor office says it is unrelated as I expected...

I have had two cortisone injections in the last three weeks, and in both cases I have ended up with severe hiccups in less than 24 hours. Not a coincidence.

this time last year i got a cortisone shot for allergies, later that day i got the hiccups and lasted about 3 days. The allergies came back a few days ago, i went today to get a cortisone shot, and i got the hiccups about an hour ago. This is when my wife reminds me of last years hiccups. Next year i hope i remember.
