Got a cortisone shot in left knee yesterday after they draided it and 18 hours later, hiccups started and will not go away. This is the second time this has happened to me after injection.

This has happened to me before.  I received a steriod shot and had uncontrollable hiccups.  My brillant doctor had me to lay on my back and stuck a qtip down both of my nostrils and wiggled it around a little....It was absolutely uncomfortable, but instantly, I was relieved of the hiccups!  The cortison shot apparently disrupts some type of nerve and it just needs to be jogged a bit to return to normalcy.

GOOD LUCK!

Count me in as one of the post steroid injection hiccupers ... right at 12 hours after the injection. HORRIBLE hiccups -- luckily have only lasted one day. Used a number of methods to quell them -- very disruptive though.

After having hiccups for 4 hours after getting a shot yesterday, I tried this. It actually worked. I'm not sure if it was a nerve, or if the resulting sneezing fit disrupted my diaphragm enough to get them to stop, but it worked. I put them up as far as I could and rolled them, after a few sneezes I did this again, and again, and again, long enough that I should've hiccuped a few times but didn't because I was sneezing. I've been hiccup free for an hour so far. Not sure if its going to be a permanent fix (really was the nerve) or temporary and will return in a few hours (just disrupted the diaphragm) but give it a try.

They came back again after two hours, and I couldn't cause a sneezing fit effective enough to stop them again. More searching, found a breath hold technique where after taking a deep breath, you hold but also hold your throat open by trying to continue to breath in for as long as you can. That fixed them this time, but I expect them to return in a few hours and hopefully I'm not going to need to find a new solution everytime.

I received a steroid shot in my right shoulder last Tuesday afternoon for a sinus infection. Felt awesome an hour later but began hiccupping that night and have been hiccupping since (it is now Monday afternoon). I'm waiting for a call back from my ENT. #exhausted

Received steroid shot in my left shoulder yesterday and about 14 hours later I woke up with a burning sensation in my stomach, I thought I had heart burn and the thought did cross my mind to be aware it might also be the start of a heart attack.  Fortunately that wasn't the case and instead the hiccups did.  I rarely get them and about an hour later they went away, but returned a couple more times before 2PM the same day.  I'm glad I found this site.  I'll email my Dr to advise.

Glad to see this post, thanks everyone!  I rarely get hiccups and have had them for 48 hours so far, starting about 12 hours after a cortisone injection in my ankle.

Glad that I found this forum. I had my first cortisone shot yesterday at 18:00 and 24 hours later I have started hickups. I've tried breathing exercises, water. Nothing has helped. I will try some benadryl tonight.

Hi - So I had an ESI done last Tuesday for neck/shoulder/arm pain from C3-C4 herniation. I wasn't alerted in advance that hiccups are an uncommon but possible side effect from the cortisone (~15-20% of the cases report it). Anyway, mine thankfully lasted "only" 18 hours before going away. I had called the office and was told that they usually subside in a day or so but can in rare cases last up to 10 days. Yikes - I can't even imagine that! While I had them they were persistent. I found that I was able to control, them for 20-30 minute stretches through 'intense' breath holding. Hope this helps.
