My husband got a cortisone shot in his knee on 2/8/11. That night he developed strong hiccups. The hiccup attack lasts for a few minutes and responded to Tums. This morning he's had them two more times.

I can confirm from personal experience, cortisone does cause hiccups. The first occurred sevral years ago. The physician called in something that got rid of them. The second time I was prepared and got a prescription for relief before I left the doctors office. That was several years ago also. Yesterday I went in for an injection and told about the side effect of hiccups, and they had several other notes from other patients on if it occurrs the subject. The doctor told me to try benedryl if the issue occurred. Woke up this morning to the hiccups, so I will try the benedryl this evening. I may also have something called in just in case. The hiccups are a nuisance.

I have had cortisone shots for my knees at intervals of 4-8 months and have had hiccups 18-24 hours for 1-2 days afterward like clockwork. Friend undergoing treatment for lung cancer received cortisone shots and had hiccups which he reported at his next visit to the cancer center. They indicated it was a side effect reported in about 15% of their patients.

I got hiccups 18 hours after shot. There definitely must be some sort of link. Not quite sure what it could be.....

After 10 days of suffering a knee problem the doc gave me a cortisone injection after drawing over 30cc of 'trauma' fluid from the knee cap.   Great relief, but 24 hours later (now) I can't stop the hiccups and have heartburn.(I never have either)
My wife suggested I look online for side effects... and I'm here...
So just 2 days to go and all should return to normal... hopefully!

Me too.  Got a steroid shot in the spine for a bad muscle spasm.  Woke up at 1:30 that night with hiccups.  have been experiencing them off and on for 22 hours.  I never heard of such a thing, so it wasn't caused by the power of suggestion.  Clearly something is going on here that the docs might want to find out about.

I got cortizone injections in my spine 3 months ago and developed hiccups the following day but only a couple of times a day but now 3 months later I get the hiccups every morning when I wake up (only a couple hiccups) and 4 or 5 more times throughout the day. My doctor also said he has never heard of this but I have only had hiccups once in my life before this and I am 48

Glad I found this discussion. Just had my third steroid shot for knee pain yesterday. Hiccups, which I rarely get, occurred the following day on all three occasions and the first two times they lasted about two days so suspect I will have them for the next couple of days. They come and go with no consistency and nothing seems to help. Dr. never heard of it so I'm glad to know this affects others and I'm not crazy.

To add to the "andecdotal" evidence: My dad (age 59) got his first cortizone shot for his knee on a Thursday and the hiccups started on Friday. It is now Saturday and the hiccups are still going - even in the middle of the night. My dad is someone who pretty much NEVER gets hiccups (he also does not EVER drink any kind of alcohol, or smokes or drinks soda or anything else like that). The ONLY correlation is the shot.
After reading a bit on here, we're convincing him to try some Tums and, if that doesn't work, some Benedryl.

I'm a 52 y.o. male, and have had a cortisone shot perhaps once every several years to reign in an out-of-control reaction to the heavy airborne allergens in central Texas. Never had any side effects like a hiccup problem, until this time around. Had a cortisone shot in the hip yesterday around noon; woke up at 6 this morning with hiccups and as of 5pm this same day, I'm still hiccuping. I think I'd rather have the sneezing. But I am encouraged that there's some explanation for it.

Yes! I'm no doctor, but I have had three cotisone injections in both knees, and after each time I got recurring hiccups for a day or two. I have them right now! that's why I'm checking to see if anyone else has the same experience. Damn, doctors should know this.

With chronic back issues and numerous cortisone injections, I have experienced hic-ups almost every time.

Had a shoulder injection yesterday and have been miserable all day with another round of hic-ups again.

I had a cortizone injection in the shoulder The next morning the hiccups started uncontrollabe lasting for 24 hours, after 24 hours the hiccups started to subside now i can get some well earned sleep. There must be a connection to the treatment
