I also experience hiccups after a cortisone injection (which I get every 6 months or so for knee and hand pain). Often the hiccups start about 12 hours after the injection and last a couple of days. Some times they are moderately severe, other times they are just bothersome.
The benefits of the cortisone outweigh the hiccup problems so far. I am concerned that one day the hiccups may be much more severe or may last a lot longer (or just never go away) since no medical practitioner seems willing to come clean on this widespread problem.

Received a cortisone injection in shoulder on Tuesday morning and started hiccups by Wednesday morning. Still hiccuping as bad today (Thursday). They come on and off constantly, even in my sleep. Cortisone helped though, shoulder feels great.

Had a double shot of cortizone on Wednesday morning for bad shoulder. Hiccups started Thursday morning - it is now Friday night and they still haven't gone away. In fact they're worse right now than ever. Hard time breathing - can't really eat or drink anything. Very freakin annoying. Hopefully they go away soon. Makes it very difficult to function. Incidentally - if I ever get hiccups I get rid of them usually within 2-3 minutes by exhaling as long as possible and then holding my breath until the absolute breaking point. I read a few years ago that oxygen depravation to the brain does something to cure them one night when I couldnt get them to stop. It's been about 10 years since then and until yesterday I have had 100% success rate with that technique. Exhale everything and hold your breath until it burns so bad you have to breathe. Hiccups gone. But not this time - mad frustration!

I have had two reactions the doctor didn't warn me about before administering two cortisone shots, one to each shoulder yesterday morning. One, uncontrolled hiccups all day today and two, my blood glucose levels went through the roof to over 400 and is still hovering above 300 regardless of the amount of insuling I take to counter the problem. I am diabetic and the orthopaedic surgeon took no note of that when he administered such a large amount of steriods. I had it listed in my paperwork and I was wearing my insulin pump with my shirt off and the infusion site in plain view for the examination and injections. He put my greater health at risk by only focusing on my shoulders. I had to verify these unexpected reactions by seaching the internet. Needless to say, I am very disappointed.

I got epidural injections in my lower back last year and then all day I had unsettled stomach. Late night I started having sever hiccups, plus I was having sever stomach reflux. I couldn't keep any food down. I had never experienced that in my life. But within 3-4 days, hiccups stopped and I felt better.
I wasn't sure if it was the cortisone that caused it or it was something else like the medication they gave me to sedate me, but I couldn't get a straight answer from the Dr and his staff. After a few day, they finally called me back and told me that hiccups are a very rare side effect and I should eat very little at a time in order to keep my symptoms under control!
On Friday, I got a cortisone injection in my knee and the same thing happened again! Hiccups keep coming and going. The strange thing is that I have gotten cortisone injections many times in the past prior to 05 and this never happened! I am not sure that whether it is caused because they have changed the drug recently or my body has gone through changes over the past few years!

I just got a cortisone shot in my lower back. Got hiccups the next morning after skipping breakfest. I got them after each time I ate. To get rid of them, holding breath, drinking water slowly and holding breath while opening my mouth really wide help. However i've got them now for 5 straight meals. Luckily I was able to fend it off last night but then I awoke today and got them again without eating.
I never get hiccups!! Maybe once a year, and I can hold my breath and they are gone. Even worse I'm feeling heartburn and getting severe "double" hiccups.
No doubt due to shots. But I wonder if skipping breakfast and having pizza for lunch maybe made it worse. Anyways my back is better and its no doubt only a small side affect that should goes away in the next couple days. Nice to know I'm not going crazy

I just had a cortisone shot in my left knee two days ago. Hiccups started yesterday and have lasted two days now. Based on these postings I expect one more day of this irritation. I am sending links to this page to my doctor for notation.

It's good to find out that I'm not the only one getting this strange side effect.
Two days ago, I got a Cortisone injection, 12 hours later I got these uncontrolable nasty hiccups
Although I'm not a doctor, these reported cases should raise the flag for a possible side effect
Regards.

Had a cortisone injection in my shoulder 2 days ago, within 18 hours had the first onset of hiccups with 5+ subsequent episodes throughout the day. Some lasting over an hour despite trying everything. Last night had several small episodes and continue today feeling like I am on the verge of more hiccups.
Regrettably and thankfully I am glad that I am not the only one that has experienced this problem.

Had cortisone injections in feet for heel pain on Monday afternoon. Hiccups started on Tuesday afternoon. It's now Thursday afternoon and the hiccups are still going strong. Not many of the posts above seem to indicate when their hiccups went away. Hopefully soon.

I got a cartisone shot yesterday afternoon. Just about 24 hours later I started to get the hic ups. Must be a connection. Everyone else seems to have experienced this problem on this website. It is probably isnt' very common. When did it take the rest of you to get over the hiccups?

Steroids do have a rare but horrible side effect of mild/ medium/severe hiccups. Last July my Dr. started me on 40mg of prednisone for the first time. Withing 24 hours I developed severe, uncontrollable hiccups that left me exhausted. It was like doing a full body flex each time I hiccuped. I called my doctor after a four of days of agony when it finally dawned on me that it might be the result of the prednisone. He dropped my dose to 20 mg and my hiccups went away the next day.
That incident reminded me of the year before when I was on 20mg of prednisone. I developed mild hiccups a couple of times, but they went away after one day, in both instances.
Yesterday, I received a cortisone shot for "inflammation" from another doctor to help combat a severe sinus infection. Yep, today I have hiccups! Its what I would call "medium" hiccups. When I get through typing this, I'm going to breath into a paper bag - that's my temporary "cure".
I breath into a paper or plastic (airtight) bag until I begin to feel a little light-headed. Supposidly, this technique raises the carbon dioxide levels in your blood, which relieve the hiccups.
I can't believe the medical community doesn't know about this horrible side effect of steroids.

I have had a few cortisone injections and ended up with severe hiccups for days, like 5 to 6 days. Wake me up in the middle of the night. So constant they wear me out. Asked the Doc about it and he never heard of it. so the hiccups continued until they were done.
