Im so sorry to hear about ur menz, and omg im taking ibpro instead of midol my next time im due to see for myself. But what I swear works is to workout even though the hurt and ive had 2 kids and my menz are miserable, especially first two days, but if I work out like cardio stuff stairs.or running, the first two days yhat are the worst as far as pain and heaviness, mine will last 2-4 days instead of 5-7. Just thought id add my trick. Good luck ladies.

I know this is a fairly old topic, but I thought I'd add my experience. I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, extremely painful periods (to the point I am often unable to function), and somewhat irregular cycles, that often seem to start at horribly inconvenient times. I did some research a few years back and found that taking a NORMAL dose of ibuprofen AND vitamin B6/B12 every 4-6 hours both lessens the severity of the cramps and pain, and temporarily slows or stops the bleeding, as well as shortening the duration of the period altogether. Its not necessary to take more than recommended.  I take 600mg of ibuprofen, one tab (usually 50mg) of the B6, and one tab of the B12 (I don't remember the mg) two to three times daily. If I remember correctly, it is not advisable to take more than 100mg of B6 daily though, so that would be limited to twice daily. I've used this method probably 10 times in the past 6 years, and it has worked each time. I'm not a health professional though, and I can't vouch for it's safety or efficacy in all cases, or if used long term. I do make sure that it is not something I do on a regular basis, and I definitely wouldn't recommend doing so, or using this if you have any stomach problems. Hope this helps!

It isn't to stop the blood. 800 mg stops the prostaglandin, but this mostly serves to stop cramps. It may shorten your period, but that's all. If you want to skip your period, you need to talk to your gynecologist about birth control pills. There are things you can do involving the pill that will safely help you skip your period. Do not take that much ibuprofen at once, you will damage your stomach.

Something to be aware of is that in a small percentage of people ibuprofen can cause tinnitus (ringing in the ears), which may or may not go away when you stop taking it.  Just something to be aware of.  (If you have tinnitus and are wondering what could be causing it, most often it's exposure to loud noise, but it could also be a side effect of a drug, such as ibuprofen.)

I know this post is from a long time ago however i post for those in the present with similar issues. This drug will not STOP your period though it will help with pains (only take two). Your GP can give you pills that will stop your period temporarily although a tampon is an easier solution.

yes, ibuprofen makes me bleed less but i was taking it too much.  I am 50 years old and My perieods are very heavy, and they last for 12 days!!!! They did'nt usto be. Anyway, I took four 450mg of red raspberry leave caps 3 times a day starting on my 3rd day and my bleeding went away 85%. it's a miracle.I'm on my 5 day and i'm taking it twice a day. Raspberry strengthens the utern walls. and it's so cheap, 7.50 at the health food store.

I have the implant, Implanon. 3 years of no pills, no shots, no patches to prevent pregnancy. I've recently had my period for 3 months, straight. Then a week break. And then it started up again. I called Planned Parenthood and was recommended to take 4 200mg Motrin every 6 hours to lessen it. In two days, it has stopped. I think that if a medical professional tells YOU it's okay, there shouldn't be a problem. Just check with your doctor first.

I was talking to my friend about wishing my period wouldn't come before my trip to Vegas (in October)... supposed to start the day I get out there :( SHe said that her doctor told her to take 800mg of ibuprofen/motrin every 4 hours starting the day before you are supposed to start.... and it will not only take care of the cramps, but cut your period in about half.... amount of flow and length of days. So I tried it... and it works!!! I did it on this August cycle... I go 'normal' for September, but when my trip rolls around, I'm doing it again. I'm not saying that it will STOP your period, because it didn't, but it really changed it to almost nothing. It's worth asking your doctor about. Don't do it without asking him/her first.

ok but how many days after u started taking them u still took or use this dosage.

I recently went to my OBGYN about my heavy periods (I'm almost 50) which started about 8 months ago. I use the diva cup, and when I am having very heavy bleeding, I have to use a pad as well, and empty the cup at least every 30 minutes, which makes it very hard to go see clients.

He recommended 800 mg of ibuprofen twice per day, and that stops the bleeding, but when it wears off the bleeding resumes (along with clots, etc.) However, if you are taking it every 12 hours, that is not a problem.

I have used raspberry leaf as a tea sporadically in the past, and will try that on my next period and see if I can cut back on the Ibuprofen. As long as you take no more than 800 mg every twelve hours WITH FOOD you should not have problems with your stomach.

When you are desperate to stop the bleeding, the ibuprofen option is great because it works within 2 hours of the first dose.

At my age, I did not want to go back on the pill or deal with the side effects of using hormones. I tried an IUD for birth control 14 years ago, and it was awful because it too would cause unpredictable heavy bleeding during periods, and there are quite a few risks associated with those as well.

Ladies, try the raspberry leaf in pill form or in tea (with peppermint, YUM!) - what have you got to lose?

I think this Ibuprofen solution really does work.  I am a 50 year old woman in otherwise good health who has begun to experience ridiculously heavy periods which on occasion last so long they leave me depleted of iron, weak, lightheaded and with a headache that lasts for weeks.  Last year this happened and the OB told me it was "normal"  for women my age.  Only after I called back to complain that I was getting weaker each day did they put me on a hormone for 10 days to stop my period.  They also ran lots of tests which came out fine and indicated that I was NOT in menopause.

For long term solutions to the bleeding they gave me three options-- the pill, an IUD and Endometrial Ablation.  I ruled out the first 2 due to a family history of blot clots.  The Ablation was such a permanent solution (meaning you could not have more children) and despite my age I was not sure I was done having children.   Recently I had another non-stop period which had been going on for 6 weeks.  Sometimes it was so heavy I was afraid to leave the house even if I wore 2 tampons and a pad! I was getting so weak and light-headed and the constant headache was getting to me so I started taking 400 mg Ibuprofen every 4-6 hours for the headache as recommended on the bottle. Within hours my heavy bleeding began to slow and stopped within 2 days.  I thought it was just a coincidence until I read these posts and now I am wondering.  I wish I'd known about this sooner.  I would never take high doses or abuse the use of Ibuprophen but for those of us who lose so much blood it causes other  health issues and who cannot tolerate hormone pills or IUD's this might be a good temporary solution.  I will ask my doctor about this.

I had been wondering if Raspberry leaf  tablets would help with excessive bleeding.  Thanks for mentioning it.  It is definitely worth a try.
