This is a guess but it may have been due to your body being so used to the ibuprofen that it went overboard due to not taking any that time.
Second guess is, like you mentioned, it could be your normal amount.
Your best bet to find out would be either ask a doctor, or go through the next few cycles without the ibuprofen if the pain isn't bad.

How the heck do you non doctors feel like you know better than the doctors who actually say this is ok for a short time? Stop telling people who have already asked a doctor to ask a doctor!!! I did this last year for a trip out of town and was just fine.. Period returned about a week later then resumed normal 26 day cycle thereafter.. Most important thing is not to take on empty stomach. If you are very tiny maybe 600 mg instead of 800

My GYN actually prescribed me 800mg ibuprofen capsules that are coded with Pepsid (sp?) to be easier on the stomach. It is called Duexis. Might be worth an ask to your doctor if anyone is going to try this method and is worried about harshness on the stomach.

I am a board certified OBGYN, and from years of experience I know that women should never questionable medical advice from anyone who is not a doctor/medical professional. Taking ibuprofen in large dosages is dangerous because it thins your blood. If you blood is to thin, it wont clot properly and oxygen can have a hard time traveling to your muscles. However, depending on your body mass and or body type and metabolism, taking over the amount it suggests on the box can be fine. Please trust your doctor over the pharmaceutical companies. The pharmaceutical companies don't tell you to overdoes partly because they don't take into account your body weight/metabolism when suggesting how much to take. So, don't take over the amount recommended without talking to your doctor. Thanks Ladies!

I was put on this high dose today for three days as well, for the same reason as you. My question is....after the three days, did you or if so when did your bleeding return?

No IBUPROFEN Please !! It acts like a Blood thinner and many times you bleed more though you think it is controlling the heavy flow during the period. Please don't mess with Ibuprofen. Avoid going to the doctors who prescribe you Ibuprofen. Long term usage of it will damage kidneys and liver. Please Please Ladies Stay away from it :( Tylenol could be better to help you with cramping (I am not sure if it will control the heavy flow).

Ibuprofen is something that doctors will prescribe for heavy periods if contraceptives and steroids are not desired.
