A word to the wise: I was having heavy bleeding and have posted previously about it. In October I had to get a blood transfusion in the emergency room ($1,800 out of pocket) 2 units of blood because I was 3 units low.
I saw an OB/GYN and he recommended Ibuprofen. The Ibuprofen worked at first, but then my symptoms persisted with each successive cycle and continued to worsen. I finally saw another 3 OB/GYNs before one ordered an imaging test. I had a fibroid taking up my entire uterus. I had at one point tried an IUD with hormones, but the fibroid pushed it out within a month. My options: hysterectomy or go on hormones that would put me in menopause, try to shrink the fibroid, then remove it if it shrank enough. I opted for the hysterectomy since I'm 50, I'm done having kids, and I was desperate. When they did the hysterectomy they found a polyp (non-cancerous!) and a form of endometryosis, all of which could have caused the crazy bleeding.
If you are bleeding 10 days or more, get tested/evaluated for a more serious problem. If you are hemmoraghing, get evaluated. Don't accept the ibuprofen as a band-aid solution, because your next cycle it may not work at all. Keep searching until you find a doctor who will actually take the time to listen.

I have had the implant Implanon for about 8 months or so now. My periods always lasted about 2 weeks, but this last month it lasted for 2 weeks, stopped for 3 days, and started back up again. I called my Dr. and he said to take 600mg ibuprofen 3 times a day for 7 days. I started doing that last night, but my question is exactly HOW does the ibuprofen help with the bleeding?

As someone who had a blood clot (occlusion) in the retina because of birth control (loestrin FE) I completely agree that BC may at times be more harmful that muscle relaxers and pain killers. Its up to the individual to consult with their MD for the correct method.

I am a believer in using Ibuprofen to decrease a heavy flow however, I agree with the reader who suggested going to the doctor for prolonged heavy bleeding, instead of assuming the Ibuprofen will solve the problem. In my case, we had done all the tests and found nothing. I was told this was "normal" for women over 40 and that 20% of woman over a certain age experience abnormal bleeding. I was given 3 choices--going on the pill, getting an IUD, or an ablation ( a surgical procedure which is not as invasive as a hysterectomy and does not mess with your hormones, but can permanently decrease or stop the flow) The first 2 choices were not an option for me since I have a family history of blood clots. I considered the 3rd option, but as a divorced woman was considering the future possibility of remarrying and having another child and an ablation would not allow that. So for me the Ibuprofen has helped on occasion.

my doctor specifically told me to take 4 pills of ibuprofen, 3 times a day but i had to make sure i ate something before taking it. so taking 3 ibuprofen is fine but 4 is recommended by a doctor. a large dose would be like 8 pills all at once

I also have a heavy period for about 7 days, my doctor prescribed taking 800 mg of Ibuprofen with 500mg of Vit C 3times daily...she said it needs to be taken with the c. I don't know the theory behind it or why it works, but it stopped my period on day 3 and it was very light in flow. 7 days compared to 3 days...wow! Better than hormones or an iud

I was trying to stop a heavy bleeding cycle because I was going to be laid up for 6 weeks with surgery. I asked my ob/gyn if I should get a depo shot. She stated that my surgeon was probably going to have me take IBProfen for swelling and that my period should be light as a result. I have been taking 2-3 200mg tablets twice a day for 3 weeks for the swelling and I was expecting my period last week. I have been getting cramps but no bleeding.

Thanks for sharing this. I had a tubal ligation almost two months ago and this is my first period since. I did spot off and on in between. I called my ob/gyn and she put me on what your dr did for you. This is my first day so hopefully it works for me. I usually only go three to four days on my period. Cramps are horrible. So hopefully this helps. I told her I'm on my 8th day and very clotty and she didn't seem concerned. She sd this is normal and can happen. It's just frustrating. How long did it take yours to ease up/stop aft using the dosage prescribed for you?
