Good luck! It has taken me awhile to actually loose my Coumadin weight. We just moved, and I'm being sent to a hematologist, even though, I haven't had any bouts with blood clots in two years. They are going to check to see if I am prone for another episode, if so, back on the Coumadin, ug! I have come to the conclusion, that it is not so much the Coumadin that causes the weight game, but the diet you have to be on. In other words, not being able to eat all those yummy green leafy, cancer fighting veggies. I told my husband that if I have to go back on it, which I plan to see if there is something else, that I will be talking to a nutritionist about diet. Hopefully, I won't have to be put back on it, and if I do, hopefully, they can find something else besides that "rat poison."

No matter what I do I keep gaining-- will it stop

So the joke's on me. Here I am, pregnant, finally with the green light to gain weight (though at a reasonable rate and on a healthy diet) and now I haven't gained a single pound. I'm convinced that being on Lovenox instead of Warfarin makes a difference, but it's funny to think that now I can't GAIN weight! I think it's because I already was carrying so much water weight from the Warfarin that my body really doesn't need anymore to handle the pregnancy. We'll see.

That's interesting nmthrombo!

You were on Warfarin?, and now Lovenox. The latter I don't know. I'm coming to the end of my 6 months on Warfarin, and I dread both going back on it, and the reasons why that would be necessary.

For so many here though, there might....might- be a glimmer of hope in taking Lovenox instead of Warfarin-Coumadin.

I have to ponder whether the predominance of Coumadin is its predominance in the medical marketplace and nothing else......

I see my (new) Doctor this week for my last INR (on my first visit to him he told me he was also on this for heart irregularity). I'm going to ask him about Lovenox, and also do some research on it.

Good luck with the pregnancy!

I am with everyone else... my behavior and diet is unchanged, but I gain weight while taking coumadin.  It's really funny in a sad way, 15 days in the hospital from PE's too numerous to count educates you quickly on blood clots and such.  Mine evidently came from a broken toe - but not the toe, the immobilizer boot smashing into my calf every step I took leading to a DVT.  Quit coumadin.  My second clot from a smash into my leg resulted in the same and a slightly shorter hospital stay.  No genetic reason for the clots, just injury related.  Third clot came after quitting coumadin after 3 months rather than 6 months (too soon evidently).

While in the hospital I had weight loss!  Perhaps lovenox related?  I was pretty sedentary while in the hospital, and ate as bad as I have ever eaten (had friends and family bring junk morning, noon, and night).  Each hospital stay, about 10-15 pounds weight loss (in roughly a week).

My arms and legs are muscular, but there is a significant buildup around my mid section after being on coumadin.  One of my "theories" regarding this gain is visible in my legs.  Both lower legs have dark spots on my skin (instead of the usual pale skin).  My socks leave indentations (swollen lower legs).  My theory is that somehow fluid is building in the space between cells, perhaps increased blood volume or plasma.  It might be that lack of clotting prevents arterial growth which would serve to channel blood flow.  Without it blood and plasma are free to roam and linger wherever it does - and not limited by arterial walls.

One of the things immediately evident from coumadin is what I call "loss of super power".  I can lift around 300 pounds, and horizontally drag 1000 pound bags of gravel.  But while medicated, cut that in half.  Oops, I forgot to take coumadin for a couple of days - viola, strength has returned!  What am I taking, Kryptonite?

I have also noticed a significant increase in "sleeping" body parts during the night.  This makes me fearful to quit, as stagnant blood can possibly result in a clot.  My ring finger is swollen on occasions - never had that problem 5 years prior to coumadin.  One week, as a lark, I decided to switch all liquid intake to pure water - no milk, soda, coffee, tea... and viola 3 more pounds in that week!  In all, I have gained 40 pounds gradually over 3 years.  When I explained my situation to my doctor - he suggested I wear compression stalkings, and that the coloration in my legs was due to poor circulation resulting from a DVT in my right greater saphenous vein.  Being a questioning individual, I mentioned that if that was true, why would my left leg be affected from a clot in my right leg.  The doctor then tried his best to explain what he had no answer to, suggesting that it was due to decreased metabolism due to age - being 40 years old I almost bought it.  I had blood tests run - everything came back perfect (mostly checking on cholesterol).  So no answers, blood clots that led to PE are both in the distant past - and my only choice is to quit, risking leaving my family without a parent - or perhaps being healthier and fingers crossed coumadin free.

My belief is that you can't exercise away liquid - that's why exercise won't make this any better.  If anything, increasing exercise may build more muscle, and more places for liquid to accumulate - causing more weight gain from extra muscle and liquid!  Besides, trying to lose weight by exercise really isn't all that productive - its the diet that makes the real difference.  And from reading other posts, 800 calorie diets are worse than death, right?  I am close to quitting - mentioned this to the doctor, who basically recited statistics but offered no assistance to monitor while coming off of it.  Apparently he claims no tests would detect the return of clots.  D-Dimer tests may actually read positive now he claims, so taking them would be a waste.  In essence, if I quit I am on my own - and my only way of detecting them is being on the verge of death with PEs - hopefully I will continue to be fortunate enough to not die in my sleep as countless other do from PE's and clots

thanks for the well-wishes! As for switching to Lovenox, the reason it is not offered is that 1) it requires daily shots and 2) it's ridiculously expensive and most insurance balks at the prescription. It's typically only seen as an option either for the very short term, i.e. right after you've been diagnosed with a clot and they need to get your blood levels into the right range quickly since coumadin takes too long, or for those who are attempting to get pregnant/are pregnant because coumadin causes birth defects.

Either way, I had to have significant documentation and doctors' notes in order for my insurance to allow me to move forward with Lovenox and even three months in, they will only let me fill the prescription for 15 vials at a time. (Isn't it sick that my insurance company has a say in whether I can try to get pregnant?)

That said, if you happen to be independently wealthy, then I would definitely push the issue with your doc. While I hate the daily shots, I felt significantly better on Lovenox (before the morning sickness and fatigue started kicking in) than I ever did on Coumadin.

Thank YOU! I just came off coumadin after 13 months and have gained 12 lbs in a month!! I can usually bounce around with 2-3 lbs but 12 on a 5'3" frame is quite obvious. My stomach feels extended and bloated all the time. I eat health, and am active and excerise, i don't get it.

Snap! Just came off yesterday. Same weight gain over the six months. Talked to my Doc' on Monday (he is on Coumadin also!). He checked his screen and said there is no advice given of weight gain. I could see he was genuine in this advice, besides he is on Coumadin for life.....and is as slim as a garden rake!!

However, unless we are all hypochondriacs, we know our bodies far better than any specialist!
Like so many others here, there could be small explanation for minor weight gain (chocolate!), but nothing for weight gain at this level.

I sincerely hope that I lose some of this weight now, and that I gain some energy again, AND that my hair regains some thickness.

My very best wishes to those of you who have to take this medication for life. Keep taking it guys,-the alternative is worse. Do the best you possibly can to minimize that weight gain that DOES occur.

I am a personal trainer began taking coumadin in June. I started to put on weight so i went to doing double sessions. I cannot lose the ten pounds of weight I gained and feel bloated. I also feel like my BMR has slowed.
If it's not the coumadin doc it's a coincidence. It could be the hospital stay etc. But:
There are ten to 12 pounds additional on my body that I cannot lose. I would usually drop weight for a competition easily. But this weight is stubborn. I will keep you informed.

Good post. i am also a powerlifer. When I had the PE didn't know I had it. Couldn't breathe etc...so I incresed my cardio to 2 miles/day walking even deadlifted. Went to the hospital ..PE. in both lungs. Now on cumadin. Now I interval the 2 miles with sprints. I actaully have my strength (but weigh 12 pounds more in the gut mostly. It feels like mostly intracellular fluid. It is the coumadin. I am off of it November....can't wait. I have genetic factors for clotting. I used to drink a coffee with ganoderma. i stopped and then came the blood clot. Coincidentally you can't take ganoderma with warafin because it does the same thing. November off coumadin then back to Organo Gold Coffee. But I will keep my cardio up. ..by the way seems it takes longer to recuperate from workoutsalso..Squatted 455 for a set a 10 a week ago and still feel it. i will contninue to experiment trying to lose the weight and keep you updated.

I have been on Warfarin since July of this year and I have noticed that, steadily , I have gained weight. I have cut out a lot of fat from my diet, and use my treadmill daily as well as running around a family, especially a six year old son. The weight is not shifting. My GP has also said that Warfarin does not cause weight gain, however I cant put it down to anything else.

I have just got back from clinic having had my INR level checked. I mentioned to the nurse there that I was concerened about my weight gain and believed it wasdue to the Warfarin. She wasn`t having any of it!! She suggested I go back to my GP and get blood tests done to determine cause of my weight gain. I mentioned this website and how many people had the same experience. It went completely over her head! I`m frustrated as I`m on life long Warfarin and desparately cocerned that I`m going to ballon at this rate. Can anyone advise?
