I suffered from Pulmonary Embolism in September 2012.  I have been on warfarin since.  I do not take any other medication.  I have also been diagnosed with Factor V Leiden.  I am an active 36 year young mother of two.  I have also experienced weight gain, 26lbs to be exact.  It has been very frustrating.  I started doing cross-fit classes in November and have only managed to get 8lbs off.  :(  I will keep trying, but was told by a Dr that weight gain is common with people taking Warfarin.  He has seen it first hand with family members that have taken Warfarin/Coumandin.

While I appreciate people who have been lucky enough to lose weight, this has not been the case with me.  My question to people who have experience weight lose is... Are you taking any other medication on a daily basis?  If so, what are you taking.

I'm hoping to get off of the Warfarin, but there is a possibility I will be on it for life (thank you Factor V).

Yes I have gained weight after they put me on coumadin I know good and well its a problem because I have not changed my eating habits. Nor exersize habits I know someone that just kept on putting on weight gain and bloated up like a baloon and ended up dying because she kept on putting on the weight. She got to 600 lbs and died in her 40s after being put on coumadin and the doctors all along were saying its not the coumadin.. Well its happening to me.. I was 123 lbs before I went into the hospital and they started me on coumadin and started pumping fluids in me while in the hospital I went in at that weight came out weighing 175 ... and I did not change anything if anything I am walking more now and I weigh two years later 200 lbs.... somthing is wrong I dont eat enough for my weight to be this I am eating the right things and following all the rules I have applied to all my life watching my food etc.. So when I say somthing is wrong there is coumadin...........................why cant they see this how many folks have to die before they admit this.

I suffered from DVT in Sept 2012 after back surgery. I was put on warfarin. From November 2012, I weighed 229, now weigh 266!

The doctor told me this morning to stop shoving food in my mouth and exercise! I joined a gym in November to geet my strength back, and am now more active than before the surgery. As for the food...... I felt like slapping him. I eat as healthy as possible for bieing on a tight budget. I drink a soda maybe once a month.

I feel like giving up. Ive been off the warfarin since mid January. Still gaining weight.

I've been off for close to 3 months and am down 10' pounds . The 10 came off immediately and since then, nothing. I have like 20-23 to go. I swear this even put on muscle . my biceps and chest are more muscular. I even though the weight hasn't gone down in a whiles I believe I have leaned little from the face to belly button. From the button to the hip is where most of the fat is. I took an antidepressant once and gained 5 pounds. I stopped immediately To prevent further weight gain and while on nothing, I gained an additional 20' pounds so I totally understand and believe your story. There's really nothing "extra" you can do so don't stress over it.

I have gained 20 lbs and no matter how hard I try, I can not lose it.The weight gain has been in the stomach region of the body. Anyone know how to lose the weight. I had CHF and can not do a lot of exercise that I use to do.

Oh yes, I agree 100 % that since I am on Warfarin and watch my diet and eat less than the average person, I have gained and have a bloated look. Finally, my oncologist has admitted that it does cause weight gain. Kinda sad, because for the rest of my life I need to be on this drug since Arixtra the shot in the tummy is way to expensive.and even though I watch my weight it does not matter. I have to deal with this and realize it is not me causing the weight gain, but Warfarin. Warfarin in keeping me safe and alive and that is the only way I can get through the change in my body.

All in my stomach as well, I look 6 months pregnant. I have gained 20 pounds this last year since Plavax was added as well as the weight from the coumadin weight before that. I am so ashamed of my weight and my looks. I will be on this medicine forever and am trying to deal with it. It is also so hard to "diet" since we all need to watch the leafy greens or add more coumadin which will defeat the purpose anyway.

I am experiencing may of the same symptoms as you are. I had a PE in August 2011 with DVT. I have had horrible weight gain, heartburn, purple ankles/feet/fingertips with loss of feeling in my fingers so if I touched something I could not sense if it was wet or whatever, tired all of the time, blurred vision, high blood pressure, in February 2013 I was on my period all but one week of the whole month and for two weeks it was major blood loss, bleeding gums when I would floss or brush my teeth, swollen feet and ankles, etc. I have tried and tried and tried to get my Coumadin clinic people and/or my GP to get me off the Coumadin and they refused or wanted me to jump through a million hoops to even think about it. I have finally decided to go off the Coumadin gradually while taking Beyond Chelation Improved by Dr. Gary Gordon to replace it. Every time I accidentally missed taking one of my oumadin pills I felt like my old self and I am using my common sense from here on out to take back my health. I am scared to death to do this but I have had zero quality of life since I was put on this medicine and I am choosing to live...however long that may be....ON MY OWN TERMS. I am convinced the doctors are keeping many, many of us Coumadin users for financial gain and I am getting off that merry-go-round. Not saying this is right for everyone but it is right for me. Best of luck to all of you and God bless.

Lucky you!! Hopefully your metabolism and body are not giving in to this side effect. Trust me when I tell you, this is not the weight you want to add. Puffy, bloated, mainly stomach area increase, not an attractive fit!

I have been on Coumadin for 4 months for DVT. I feel like I just keep getting bigger and bigger. I have always maintained a good diet and exercise daily routine and my weight in the last 6 yrs. has always been right on by a pound or two. This stuff makes me feel gross. I've told my doctor this and he really doesn't say a thing. Nor do the nurses. They just say you look fine. Do people in fact fain weight and why? I have a little less than 6 weeks left until I'm off of this. Will I just keep growing. So far 5 lbs.For me...This is allot. Any thoughts anyone?

HI. I am just reading this now and hope you can help me. I have been on Warfarin/Coumadin now for 4 months.
I too, like yourself am VERY active. I work 10 hour days; constantly moving, walk 3 miles a day, and eat healthy.
I was a former marathon runner, so I am very particular about my foods.
Since I was diagnoised with a clot in my leg, DVT, I first took Lovenox injections & coumadin, and lost weight...Then the regular regiment of coumadin 10 days later. My dose has been on target 8 mg daily and I am gaining weight...I have gained (guessing by my clothes, afraid to actually see the #'s) 5-8 in four months. I am a size 2-4 and now my 4's are a squeeze to fit in. My weight has not chained in over 6 years. When I was running I weighed less than my norm of the past 6 years...Can you please tell me if you DID get off the drug? And did you get your body back? How long did it take? I am hoping that I'll be off this in a matter of 2 weeks; my greatest fear is I'll have to take it for the remianing 6 weeks, or worse, a life time. I am having my 2nd doppler done next week. Those results will determine what happens next. I am just looking for some support...I hope your out there.
