My son is returning from hospital in 2 days. He is 18 years old and he suffered a severe back injury while playing for his football team. The operation went great and the prognosis for his recovery is very good. But, doctors said that he will have to use painkillers for some time, until he recovers fully. I am afraid of that thought. He will become chemically dependent teenager, and afterwards we have to release him from those medicaments. How are we going to do that?

You are facing a serious problem. Painkillers have their function and it is to help during rehabilitation process. Yet, they can cause dependence in patients using them. I heard of a friend's friend who was in a similar situation and it took him months to free himself. But then, he is living alone, so I assume that with your help he will stop using medicaments easily.
