My grandfather needs to have heart valve replacement next week. Doctors told him that they are put biological heart valves. I know that biological valves are valves of animals, like pigs, which undergo several chemical procedures. Can somebody tell me what is difference between artificial and biological heart valves? Thanks!

The main difference between artificial and biological heart valves is in their durability. The mechanical valves are excellent in terms of durability, but are hindered by their tendency to coagulate the blood. Biological heart valves are less durable and must be replaced periodically and they are used for patients who are over 65 or cannot take anticoagulants.
