I had a history class yesterday. My teacher was talking about battle of Marathon. He said that this event is connected with today's marathon race. He said that it is the distance from Marathon field to Athens. A Greek soldier was sent to deliver news about Greek victory over Persian forces. Is it true? How long is that marathon distance?

Yes it is true. You should not be suspicious about your professor. The length of marathon varied at first. It was not fixed. At first modern Olympics in 1896 it was 40 km. It varied during the time from 40 km to 42, 75 km. Then in 1924 International Amateur Athletic Federation decided it will be 42,195 km.
