Just wanted to add my story, when I was 17 after an abortion and (at the time having a one year old daughter), very regular periods (like to the hour!), and being normal weight, I took the shot once.  Gained 75 lbs in 3 mos. periods stopped permanently after the initial bleed for weeks on end, and been assured over and over, it's not the drugs fault.  7 years later, after I'd starved myself to diet (as losing weight became near impossible) I managed to have a baby boy after I'd completely given up.  We have now been trying again for 8 years to have a baby.  This time, with many failed IUI's, clomid, femara, metformin, and another 100 lb weight loss.  Still nothing.  I FIRMLY believe this drug is to blame, it messed me up for good and I've wondered if the abortionist pushed this drug on me at the time, worried I'd have future pregnancies.  I wish circumstances had been different then...I was unmarried and not wanting more than the one child at the time.  20 years later....I am infertile with an initial diagnosis of "stress" but later, confirmed that I have PCOS.

I'm very skeptical of the Depo Provera shot. I wouldn't even consider myself a long time user, however, in just one full year of taking the shot, my period had stopped completely. A side effect that I didn't think I would be dealing with at the age of 16. This lasted 6 or 7 months.  It took two years for my period to come on a regular basis. I wonder what was happening to my body. I wonder if in the future I will have trouble conceiving.

You should really rely on your own doctor for that. Personally, my doctor is great and has said there are many things that affect fertility and not just the depo shot and these are reasons why women don't always consider. Talk to your doctor about other options like an IUD and such. But really it is up to you and the professional advice that you receive.
Many women conceive just right after going off the shot and some don't. Age and environment affects that.

Hope this helps :)

Hi ladies, I was hoping to get some insight on my situation, unbelievably I have been on and off this shot for going on 18 years once I had my son as a teen. I had Endometriosis at the age of 20 and was put on a 6 month shot of fake Menopause 5 months into it I became pregnant with my daughter. She is now 14. I am now in my 30's and having so many issues. I am now having some bleeding when I have never had any before, breast are tender to the touch, light head, wieght gain, and No I am not pregnant I have taking tests at home and a urine and blood work at the doctors all have came back negative. So I am lost, Never had these problems and now thinking about getting off of this but not sure what form of birth control to use. I was never regular always had problems so not having periods for years has been a blessing for me.

I would love any kind of feed back...

Thanks!!

Glad I found this!
My last depo was due in April after being on it since for 6 years. Only went on it as it was the in thing at the time. I now realise that it has made me feel awful coming off.
Sore boobs, white discharge, sleepless nights, nausea are all side effects of coming off it. I am getting married in October and are dying to start a family. This has pretty much ruined all chances in the foreseen future. Those who are looking at getting it don't bother. And no my doctor didn't tell me about any of this. I am waiting for my periods returning so I know when I can start trying for a baby.
If anyone wishes to give me any advice please do so.
Yours sincerely
A desperate to be mum

Im a 26 yr old mom of two boys after having a misscarage when my youngest son was seven months old i got on the depo shot. i was only on it for nine months. i stoped taking it because it was causing me to have worse pms symptoms and heavy bleeding. in the last seven months i have had two misscarages. i think that i may now be infertal due to the depo shot. im going to visit an obgyn and see if i can figure it out. i will post what the dr says.

I was on depo for over 12 years. Yes, 12 years, the entire time without a period. My last injection was Dec 2010 and I finally got my period back in July 2011, but it wasn't regular. It took awhile for it to become more regular, but it was never completely regular. We started TTC in January 2011 and finally got our positive result in May. I really thought that it was hopeless and I would never be able to have kids, but it is definitely possible!
