You asked about the cost, which was not nearly what a Holep from a top-flight surgeon at the May Clinic or other such clinic would have been I guess it was about one third of the amount you mentioned. Medical procedures in Germany are very high-quality, but often cost less that in the US. I did not have a private room, and was not a private patient strictly speaking (although I did have the doctor I wanted to have for the operation because he is the only one who performs the Holep in Munich). In comparison the US seems much more expensive, and I think it is in part driven by the cost of malpractice insurance. On the other hand, the Urological Clinic in Munich is part of a state hospital, so I think one of the goals is to keep it affordable.

One third of the US cost is a great deal-good for you. I am quite pleased with Indiana Univ./Dr. Lingeman--he is very competent, personable, and his support at the hospital know the HoLep very well.

I am having The procedure by Dr. Lingeman in late September. I will post my results. Do you have any updates on your condition?

rhesterb - each of us had a different situation and nearly - if not all - are glad we had the surgery. after you meet with dr. L and know the numbers and how large your prostate is you'll probably be in a better position to make your decision.

Hello rhesterb,
This is just me. I had HOLEP by Dr Lingeman
Oct.22 ,2012. The entire staff in his office and the hospital is Great.
I dont know you situation, but I know mine. I experienced acute retention from July until October. I had to self cath . The first time I urinated after surgery I felt as if a huge weight was taken from me.
The surgery made a huge difference in my life .I do not regret it for a minute.
There is very little pain involved.
I was back to work in 2 weeks.
I could sleep throught the night.
My erections improved.
I do experience retrograde ejaculation.
The quality of my orgasm has not diminished .
I still have very minor stress incontinence.
I wear a very light weight pad to absorb what I would call a seeping not a stream.
I had a prostate of 110 grams. 92 grams were removed. My PSA numbers were as high as 17 prior to surgery down to .36 six weeks after surgery. I am so thankful to Dr Lingeman and his staff . I cant say enough about the compassionate care I received at Methodist hospital. I hope the best for you .

Hello Just Me;
This is Bill in Ca -and I have not heard from you in a long time. I hope you are well.
As you know, I had HoLep with Dr. Lingeman a short time after you-Jan, 2013. Clearly, it was "surgery" and it took a while to heal but now I am fine--have retrograde, but that is the price one pays--otherwise, i never even used a pad-not once. I left the pads in the hotel trash can in Indianapolis. I am also grateful to Dr. L-- and his staff-they were great. After a year and a half, I have no issues---I would not mess around with local urologists--all they know is TURP- Dr. L is the best.

Hi Bill and Steve ,
Good to hear from both of you. I am amazed you never touched a pad Bill. I have wondered why I still have this seeping. It`s not enough to really bother me. I still do Kegals and can see a big difference I would still have the surgery again in spite of the very minor seeping! I have a friend at work that just had prostate surgery. I believe it was Green light laser. he is 3 weeks overdue from his return date. He was supposed to be out 4-6 weeks . just me

Hello Steve & Just Me:
In the wise words of Just Me: we are all a little different.
All of our bodies, ages, health, prostate size, bladder function,, etc are different.
I feel quite fortunate and my wife has said several times: the outcome could not have been better. In looking back, I knew that I had to travel to Indiana and see Dr. Lingeman-- it was the right thing for me to do. It was really inconvenient, expensive, and disruptive--but necessary. Bill in CA

Thanks for checking in Bill. Looks like we are all doing well (though lately I've gotten up twice at night. Gotta cut out the after dinner fruit and decaf I didn't have the inconvenient issue (Dr. Das is right here and I honestly believe as good as Lingerman - they studied together) nor expensive. (hospital is 15 minute walk for me and Medicare covcered EVERYTHING). I was really lucky. There was a guy here (Rich) revently on the board who is also in Philly. He met with Dr. Das a week or so ago and decided to wait 6 months. But - again - he doesn't have to travel.
Hoping you are having a great summer and ENJOYING LIFE!
Steve
