I've just got my first prescription for birth control (Aviane 28), the doctor nor the pharmacist told me when I'm to take my first pill... On the instructions it says to take it on the 1st day, 5th or if I start my period on a Sunday... (I'd prefer to take it on the 1st day). Do I take the normal pill or the "Sugar" pills, when my period starts?

You take the normal pill first! The sugar pill (or low hormone pill) is to bring on a period! I just read the instructions and is quite confusing isn't it? What it is basically saying is this! ALL cycles are based on day 1 - day 1 is the day your period starts! So according to this, you can either start taking the pills on the first day of your period, or on the 5th (where most women end their period) OR on the 1st Sunday after your period starts! Which IS confusing as what happens if your period starts on Saturday - means you are taking the pill on day 2!!! LOL So before we go further with this - when is your next period due?

Also - as with other pills - you need back up protection for the first week - 2 weeks after you start the pill! BUT I tell EVERYONE to always use a condom while taking the pill - 1 takes away virtually all chances of pregnancy! 2 - takes away virtually most of the STI's (wont stop genital warts, herpes (from oral, crabs etc.)

My period is due any day now (I've never been regular but always comes within a few days of when I'm expecting it...) SO, the first day I get my period, I can take the first pill in the day? Say I were to get it on Saturday, do I take a pill from the first saturday, or the first pill of the pack? I'm sorry for all the questions but as I said it's my first time and the doctor nor pharmacist explained anything... Thank you so much for your help!

You're welcome! and it IS confusing, So lets go with your first day of your period - write it down so you know - and take the pill at the same time everyday! It's not really about chances increasing over a couple of hours, it's more about you get into a routine so you don't forget! And have your partner use a condom - I always tell boys and girls to  ALWAYS wear a condom and pull out to ejaculate into it - takes away virtually all chances of becoming pregnant! Your period might be off for the first bit! I remember when I first went on BCP I had 3 periods in one month, then I had to try out a couple - but that was a "while" ago ;-D And formulations have changed since! But you might have a delayed period or an early period - when first starting, so just carry personal protection with you for the first little while - so you don't get taken off guard! We ALL have horror stories about that! Hope this helps!
