First US Uterus Transplant Planned

First came kidney, liver and heart transplants. Then they started transplanting hands and faces. The next organ planned by the Manhattan team of doctors is the uterus.

The procedure, if everything goes as planned, will enable many women who had their uterus left barren, bear their own children.
Many women are born with uterus malfunctions, or their uterus was damaged in accidents, by cancer or pregnancy complications. Although they do have options such as adoption or surrogacy, many women wished they had their own nine-month experience.

We can say that carrying out pregnancy is one of the very basic desires of many women.

Of course, when something this big is planned or taking place, there are always objections and there are always skeptics.

Transplant experts, fertility specialists and medical ethicists are questioning the safety of the procedure, wondering if it has been tested enough on animals and if the possible benefits would outweigh the risks the operation may carry for both the mother and the fetus.
Then there are ethical questions.
The planned uterus operation involves two medical specialties that already spark a lot of controversy: transplant surgery and reproductive medicine.

Those experts that are against the whole procedure use arguments such as those that women do not need to undergo the whole nine-month experience as the real parenting starts when the child arrives home.

The surgery is taking place as soon as independent experts confirm it is safe. Women who are considering the operation are being screened exhaustively to make sure they fully understand the risks and have seriously considered alternatives.
