I am having a MRI for my calf this afternoon. What should I be expecting? This will be my first ever MRI and I have heard horror stories about being in that enclosed tube or something.

Because it is just the calf, will my head be inside the tube? (Assuming it is a closed MRI).

I've only ever had the open ring MRI, which a lot of facilities have since the tube is real scary for a lot of people. The tubes are very closed in and I've heard you hear a lot of loud banging, but if you don't mind tight spaces you should be OK. I can't speak to the head being inside thing, perhaps someone else can, but I would think not, if it's your calf.
What are they looking for, a tear?

Thanks for the response.

I am hoping that my head will not be enclosed, but I guess we will see.

I have been having calf pain for a few months. I take a week or two off, but it kept coming back. I went to a massage therapist who felt a "knot" on the outside of the calf and he could not get it "worked out" after two visits so he suggested I see an Ortho. The Ortho felt the knot and suggeseted the MRI. The calf seems to be better now, but I think I will go ahead with the MRI just to be safe.

If nothing else, running is teaching me a lot about the human body.

I've been to two, both closed. The first was for a study on bone density in female endurance athletes. The were looking at my vertebrae in that one. Went all the way in feet first and had no problems. Lots of banging like jackhammers throughout. Very loud.
The second one was for a problem with my left shoulder. Went in head first and freaked! Please, please, please get me out of here! Still get the willies from that if I think about it.

All done. Only my legs had to go in. Once my face got close to the "tube" I did realize that I might have a problem if I ever have to go all the way in on some future occassion.

Maybe not but tell them about it before you do.
