I have just been reading up all about Goodpasture's syndrome and it seems to be a very rare disease indeed. Autoimmune disorders tend to scare me anyway but this seems like an especially horrible one. Has anyone been diagnosed here? I am now all worried that I have got it myself.

Are you overly worried about getting Goodpasture's syndrome? It's not like a flue that just attacks you, you know? It is normally genetic and does not strike you just because you are afraid of it. If you have a strong fear of catching diseases, then you should definitely see a doctor, but not for diagnosing Goodpasture's syndrome.

My girlfriend was diagnosed with this condition in April this year. She was VERY unwell and was initially diagnosed with a chest infection and anaemia. Three weeks later she developed nausea and vomiting and one morning she coughed up a significant amount of blood, which was when I took her into A&E. She rapidly deteriorated and because gravely ill, being addmitted to the intensive care unit in Addenbrookes hospital for several weeks. Luckily she has pulled through. Her lungs are now fine but she will remain dialysis/ kidney transplant dependant for the rest of her life. Basically, when I'm saying is that unless you are feeling very very nauseous, are noticeably anaemic and/or coughing up blood, there is such a slim possibility you have this (horrible) & life-threatening condition it odesn't bear thinking about. It affects 1 in approximately 2 million people (1 in six million women) so stop worrying yourself and go out and enjoy life - at the end of the day it's bloody precious. I bet everyone who's had a disease like this wishes they hadn't spent a single second worrying about what they might get.
