I would like to know something about ALS. Grandfather died of ALS, is there hereditary risk? He was 81 when he passed away, and he fought with ALS for almost a decade. Now, I cannot help but think about possible hereditary risk, not for myself but for my mother's sake. She is 55 year old and she gets tired easily, or is it just my imagination? I cannot tell for sure.

Well, I suppose that you could ask her to explain her physical state in detail. Still, without medical evaluation, you will not be able to determine whether your mother has first symptoms of ALS. Patients with inherited ALS make 5 to 10 percent of all those who suffer from this disease. So, yes, there is s possibility, but doctor will tell whether your mother is ill or not.

Hi there teresina ,

It is always hard to determine if conditions such as ALS can be hereditary from father to the daughter but there is always small chance which usually goes from 5 to 10 %.

If you are worried about your mother mental state or you have some other suspicions regarding some symptoms you have noticed it would be best to take her to the doctor and do the test as well. Because genes are yet to be researched and sometimes even doctors can’t explain why is something happening.

I hope that you are just imagining things because your grandfather has recently passed away and that you will get good answers from your doctor. Good luck.
