My father has a colon cancer. This happened after the long period of Chrons disease. Complication of that disease led to malign tumor occurring. After the intervention and removal of the part of the colon, he should be subdued to therapy with citostatics. What I would like to know is which medication is better, Granisetron or Ondansetron, is it a question of duration of 5-HT3 receptor blockade?

Both these drugs block specific 5-ht3 receptors and I that way subdue vomiting. Effects of these meds are similar, but there is difference in pharmacological characteristics (the way they are absorbed, life time). Ondansetrron blocks 5-HT3 receptors and increase the amount of 5-HT chemical and its metabolites. Granisetron has the same effect and also blocks same receptors in the vagus nerve.
