Hi, I'm 15 and I'm a freshman in high school. Ever since I was a little boy I have had a bad habit of talking in a high pitched voice only infront of my parents (I don't want them to think their boy is growing up). Anyway at school I talk in a normal voice but it's still high. People make fun of me at school for it and tell me I sound like a girl. It has never really bothered me, but lately it has. Almost every guy in my grade has a deep voice except for me. So I've come to the idea that the reason is my voice is high is because of my habit. So I was wondering if because I talk in a high pitched voice infront of my parents, does it effect my regular voice. And most of all, is my voice ever going to change or has my habit like strained my vocal cords so my voice will never change?

Hi Phinnweb

Your voice should start changing anytime now.

I would think you have not done any damage to your vocal cords because of your habit of talking in a high pitched voice around your parents.

It could be that under certain circumstances your high pitched voice is what comes when you’re nervous and maybe you just have a bit of a naturally higher pitched voice.

The best things might just be to speak in your natural voice and tone whatever that is all the time and that includes at home with mom and dad.

They know their boy is going to grow up and the changes that happen along with growing and developing will take place as well.

Try getting into the habit of using your natural voice and tone all the time, avoid trying to deepen it at school or with friends and stay away from the high pitched mom and dad talk use what comes out naturally and see what happens.
