7 months after my ORIF surgery for 3 broken metatarsals I had the two large screws taken out yesterday, the ones that went across the lisfranc part, 1st metatarsal. (The two plates (5 mini-screws each) stay in for good.) Anyway it was totally painless! In at 7 and out by 10:30. I was "asleep" for about an hour or less, and I woke up with my boot on, with a bandage underneath. Have to wear the boot for 2 weeks, but I can take it off at night as long as I don't walk without it.

Was given a round of antibiotics, too.

I kept waiting for some pain to set in, and a little did in the middle of the night, an ache like someone had kicked me on the side of the foot. I had to walk with crutches yesterday with weight on my heel only. Today I can walk in the boot "as tolerated". I can tolerate it, it's sore but nothing to wince at. I have to wear the boot for 2 weeks, and can't get the foot wet for 5 days. After 2 weeks I go back for x-ray and last office visit, then I'm done.

So how is it? I've been near-limping for months, no real pain but no running and down stairs have been a little slow. It's all tolerable, walking slowly and bike riding, but no dancing ;-) . It has really felt like I've been walking with screws in my foot. I'm really hoping that with those 2 screws out I'll have less pain and more flexibility. I'll guess that after two weeks I'll see and probably slowly get back into more activity. In any case I'm hopeful!
