Im 17 years of age, and 9 months ago i had a hemicolectomy due to a ruptured appendix.
i had to have half my large intestine removed and some of my small intestine removed.
since the operation, recovery has been terrible. i am in constant pain and medication doesnt seem to do much good. i have been back in hospital suffering from adhesions and blocked bowels.
im very scared i will have to have a bag and am worried i will be in this pain forever as i know adhesions are for life.
i suffer from very bad stomach irritation and am very aware of my organs working. i get very bad colic and wind pain. i also dont get the feeling of needing to urinate until i really am desperate, i just dont know when i need to go, and i only know because i have learned that certain stomach pain means my bladder is full. another thing is a have acidic diarrhea caused by my intestines not absorbing bile salts. i am also now anemic because my body lacks the ability to absorb iron correctly.
i have frequent bm, about 3-6 times a day.
i have tried different foods after being advised to eat what i like from the hospital, i found that gluten and anything with wheat in can give me stomach pain, but large amounts of eating does too.
i have constant pain every day and harsh pain very regularly, maybe 5 times a week but it varies.
has anyone been through this before? can u tell me how long you took to recover and the problems u faced?
i feel very down about this as i am young and feel like i cant do anything or enjoy my life.
i am un educated about having a bag but i dont want one as i will feel grose and i am already unhappy with how i look as i lost 2 stone after the operation. (i wasnt allowed to eat for the 2 weeks i stayed in hospital after the op).
please tell me this will end.

Andre,
I had a hemicolectomy 2 years ago under different but mostly similar conditions. I had frequent BM for about 18 months and extreme pain for most of that time.
In the last 6 months or so my digestive tract has sorted itself out and I'm back to eating normally and life is 90% back to normal. My energy levels have returned and I'm sleeping through the night.
The only issues that I still have are occasional diarrhea and sometimes I have severe stomach pain when I need to have a BM - but I don't feel the 'urge' like I used to.
Hope that helps!

Hi Andre
I had the same problem as you in 2002, a ruptured appendix and peritonitis. I had a hemicolectomy and 6 weeks later had further surgery due to adhesions. it took me a good 6 months to recover. I was extremely tired and weak but eventully Igot my strength back.
I still get some pain but it usually goes with pain killers and doesn't last, but I do have discomfort with wind and frequent bm's. I have tried to figure out if certain foods effect me more than others and maybe too much spicy food isn't good and I cannot digest skin on fruit and sweet corn is a no no, otherwise I eat normally now. The weight I lost during the two times I had surgery has returned (unfortunately in my case, I would have prefered to stay thinner) so no doubt your's will too in time. In other words things will get better soon. I have not had any more problems with adhesions but sometimes my stomach feels really hard and other times my scars really hurt but then it goes off
Hope you are feeling better now

I'm curious if you ever received any help? In 2011 I had a hemicycle tommy and to this day I have horrible diarrhea. My gastro told me he didn't know what to tell me.

I have just had hemicolectomy surgery, right side cecum, and I need to take a cholesterol medication. Which would be the best for genetic cholesterol?
