Had Hemmorroid surgery 9/17. They sent me home same day and gave me pain medicine (later I discovered caused me to be constipated). On post op day 4, I started having cramps similar to child bearing cramps. I couldn't pass a stool and when I tried I felt like I was going to pass out. I explained my symptoms to my male doctor who assured me that this was normal but my gut instinct told me that the pain I was experiencing was not normal. Post op day 6, I went to the emergency room and they discovered I had lost too much blood. They next day, 9/25 they gave me 2 bags of blood and I went back into surgery. My doctor (surgeon) discovered I had ruptured at the stitch line in the colon. My doctor told me he wasn't sure why I had ruptured but it could of been from me straining to pass a hard stool. This time I stayed in the hospital for 3 days and during that time they gave me Morphine to help with the pain. Later to find out this caused constipation. So why didn't they give me stool softener? Latert they did send me home and prescribed Milk of Magnesia & Fiber one to soften my stools. They also sent me home with Percotin for pain (also constipates). On 10/01 I still hadn't passed a stool, the last time was before my surgery on 9/16. I experiencing the same labor cramps and was in so much pain. My stomach was so big and I could hear rumbling sounds from being constipated. On 10/02 went back to the emergency room and they did an x-ray that indicated I might have a bowel obstruction. I had another surgery and my doctor says he took alot of poop out of me. They were hard and that is why I couldn't pass them. I stayed in the hospital 3 days, this time denied all drugs that would constipate me, demanded stool softeners and demanded they allow me to stay in the hospital until I passed a stool on my own. Now it is 10/18 and I am still in alot of pain when I go to the restroom. I feel like it burning when I pass a stool, I bleed about a soda cap full and I still have very painful external hemmorroids. When is this going to end? I am scheduled to go back to work on 11/12 but will I be ok by then? Has anyone experienced the extreme pain after this surgery and why do I still have external hemmorroids? At this point I am so dissappointed and don't trust my doctor. All along he told me this was "normal" but come to find that he says It I am a rare case because of the rupture, hemmorriging and bowel obstruction. I would appreciatef anyones feedback. Thanks

Hi Leesa,

A lot of the problems caused are from the pain killers. Which you are aware of. The more powerful they are, the more they bind you up.

Here is the kicker - they do little to dampen the pain you are going to go through. They seem to cause more problems then anything else - prolong the agony. Thats totally my opinion, not a medical one.

You need to be having the METAMUCIL (or equivalent), laxative, high fibre (ALL BRAN - have it a couple of times a day till you go). Drink water - not tea/soft drink..

Write down on a piece a paper when you go to the toilet - read it - "I must keep breathing. Holding my breath will increase the pain". Don't assist the bowel movement, let the stomach muscles kick it out. It will happen. It is going to seem like the stomach muscles push it to a point and stops, but the muscles will do it without your assistance. The pain eases after a few bowel movements. Stick to a routine when you go in. Only go when you need to.

The blood is normal - I remember seeing pools of the stuff in the bowl.

Have a salt bath after a bowel movement.

I don't believe that anybody can escape the pain, but you can help make the movement quicker by applying some techniques I used.

Okay - my surgery is a breeze compared to yours. But I believe that what I've experienced and culled from this list will help.

Just remember when you go and your passing a stool, and the pain is unbelievable, that we are all there sympathizing with you.
