How dangerous are pineal cysts

How big was it?

Did you follow up with a second opinn? My daughter is 14 and they found a cyst after having daily 24 hr headaches, difficult time to fall and stay asleep and one fainting episode a few months prior. They also say it does not cause symptoms but My kid is not making it up so wth??m

I know this was posted a year ago, but it sounds like you may have hydrocephalus. I had symptoms like yours start in January 2004 and the symptoms got worse and worse. I had a MRI in may and the doctor who read it said it was normal only it wasn’t! They used that very same MRI in October when I took it to a neurologist to tell me I had a growth on my brain. Two days later I met with a neurosurgeon and he performed emergency to put a shunt in my brain. He told me it would only take me laying down for a nap and I could’ve died. The pressure had gotten that bad. One of the symptoms i remember vividly is whenever I would lay back, I could head the blood rushing in my ears. And it always felt like someone was pushing on my head. Just a constant pressure. (My lesion is between the brain stem and pineal gland. I don’t know if it’s a cyst or a tumor but I am scheduled for a MRI soon. I haven’t had one since 2005!)

Hi I'm glad to hear of your recovery my 19 year old daughter has a pineal cyst and she has various symptoms headaches loss of vision poor appetite and has a very bad memory she's very forgetful and is having to be re taught some things that she's known all her life but doctors and specialists are not even doing any investigation's to find out how big the cyst is it what's in the pineal cyst I'm very concerned for her health and the way it's affecting her please help

Beth, sorry about the pain you are going through. I had a 10x11mm calsifed cyst in my pineal gland. By the age of 27 it was causing hydrocephalus, and discovered in a scan for a hit I took to the head. Their guess was it has been growing for 13years and has gotten too big. All my life had extreme migraines maybe twice per year, but headaches all day, everyday. I had it removed by craniotomy. My vision has gone back to normal, but this is the only change. Surgery was also risky, but I had no choice. As for your headaches. I have finally found 1 medication after trying several for years. I now take matripolol “spelling may be off”. It’s a beta blocker, but is the only thing to not necessary eiliminate, but relieve my daily headaches, with no side effects. Wish you the best.

I have the same thing my doctor just said it was to dangerous for surgery cause it was so deep in the brain so if the cyst bust you die I always wondered but was to afraid to ask

i also have a pineal cyst, 1.6 x 1.2, that was found a year and a half ago by accident... which most of them are if your asymptomatic...as it turns out i have many symptoms that the drs attribute to other issues. Fortunately i do not have the head aches in the morning anymore after stopping all the sleep meds that left me hung over and most likely the cause of the head aches.... i do have light flashes, terrible sleep, memory loss... many of us are told these cyst are nothing to worry about. I was told they can not confirm cyst vs tumor without biopsy. I did research the brain stem institute in LA and they are the leading authority on surgical removal. the pineal gland governs melatonin as well as releases DMT. It works in conjunction with the other glands in the endoctrine system. i asked my neuro oncologist if there was a test to check levels of melatonin and she said no. I have now found this is not true. Dr Lewy at the Oregon Health science institute has written several papers on the pineal gland and circadian sleep disorders. Testing can be done using urine, saliva, and blood. Melatonin supplements can be used half an hour before desired sleep at 1 to 3 mg. there are no adverse affects of taking melatonin in fact just the opposite. It will help with all the other hormones our body needs. it will help with dreams since DMT is responsible for vivid dreaming. Removal is the last resort. My mother passed away with dementia ..... being 57 years old at diagnosis and having memory issues i had a neuro psychology test, 3.0 hrs, to determine early onset dementia. The test was negative and symptoms attributed to insomnia. I am living with sleep deprivation and fortunate to be retired. I sleep for only 3 hours at a time and don't believe i am getting enough REM sleep. As we age our melatonin levels decrease. Calcification of the pineal gland is common as we age. The pineal gland was one of the last glands to be discovered in the endoctrine system and not enough research has been done on this gland to actually know what and how much this gland does. All of us must be pro active in demanding answers from these doctors. Remember they are doctors PRACTICING medicine... some have practiced more than others. If and when i start to have seizures or migraines i will insist on removal. there's not a lot of room in the brain for extra stuff and it never ceases to amaise me when is hear the stories of others who are told the same thing....don't worry its nothing to be concerned about. I believe its the lack of education and medical insurance protocol that keeps us from getting the help we need. MRI's and brain surgery are very expensive and insurance companies will do what they can to not have to pay for this. So far for me my MRI's show no change in the size of my cyst. I will be having another in one week.

She said cm you are talking mm. A millimeter is 1/10th of a centimeter, so hers is the equivalent of 20mm & much bigger than yours if you want to compare. So given that, I don’t think you should minimize her situation.

Hello my daughter has this cyst to she has eye sight problems severe headaches and gets very fatiuged shes in hospital at the moment her cyst has grown in 6 months its now 7.5 mm x 5.0 im so worried that the doctors are ignoring it im hoping they can operate even though that scares the hell out of me what was the size of your ?

My daughter has what they say to be a benign pineal cyst they state that it's the size of the end of qtip so no worries. As I understand it the pineal gland is only the size of a pea so wouldn't that be the same in size? May I get the name of your neurosurgeon?
