Yes i was taking an obscene amount, i could get by on 30 tablets a day, but i was always chasing the high and feeling of normality. Within those 6 years i developed 3 stomach ulcers and 2 kidney stones.... caused by the excessive amounts of ibprofen and codiene (Nurofen Plus).
I had quit successfully after about 2 years of use by going to a inhouse detox center. There i was prescribed subutex twice a day, and i had absolutely no withdrawls, but i hadn't committed mentally to quitting and was using again within 2 hours of being released. It didn't take long before i was in codiene's grip again.
After this, i got married, started a new job, and bought a new house. I hid my addiction from my wife for all this time (she still doesn't know, though maybe suspects from my multiple chemist charges on the CC daily). I had to quit, and i had to do it without anyone knowing.....
I had done cold turkey and got to day 5, where it became just unbearable. After 4 days of no sleep, and needing to go to work tomorrow, i gave in. The pain was also becoming unbearable. I knew if i lasted just 2 or 3 more days the worst would be behind me... but i just couldn't do it.
But i did manage to quit, and am now successfully clean and have been for 2 months. This is how i did it.
I knew i could survive on 30 tablets a day, but to make sure i wouldn't give in, i was generous to myself and allocatted myself 45 tablets. Instead of taking all at once i split the does up into 3 x 15, morning, noon, and night. I maintained this regiment for 3 days, and the withdrawls were virtually non-existent.
I allowed my body to get use to the lower dosge, and than started dropping it each day....
3 x 14 tablets daily
3 x 13
3 x 12
3 x 11
etc etc
When i got to 3 x 10 i kept that dose for 3 days, to allow my body to readjust. at this stage i had very light joint aches, but it was completely bearable, it wasn't as overwhelming as cold turkey.
Again i dropped the dosage but increased the frequency by adding a dose when the leg aches started
4 x 9 tablets daily
4 x 8
4 x 7 (at this stage i was beginning to have moments of normality, about 2 minutes where i felt great kept me going)
4 x 6
The leg aches were there, but still very light, there were moments where it would creep close to being unbearable, and i would just take the 4th dose to help.
Now i increased the frequency again, but dropped the dosage
5 x 5 tablets daily
5 x 4
5 x 3 (I stayed at this dose for 3 days to allow body readjustment. The withdrawls did not become any worse)
And than i changed the pattern to
6 x 2 tablets daily; i knew i was nearly there. Still had the leg aches, but very manageable.
Then i changed it around, instead of dropping the dose, i dropped the frequency.
5 x 2 tablets
4 x 2
3 x 2 (I am at reccomended daily dosage level, it was an estatic feeling to know i reached this point)
I kept it at this level untill the slight leg aches (still not bad) faded, approximately 4 days.
I than went in for the kill.
3 x 1 tablet daily, for 1 day. Than i quit completely.
And i had no more withdrawls. I was free, and have been since.
This taper method lets you withdraw with completely manageable withdrawls, you *should* only get slight to moderate leg and joint aches. I had no gastro problems, no sleepnesses, no headaches, nothing else.
I will note however that i had tried to quit by tapering before, and failed because i either went to fast, or too slow that i didn't see enough progress and fell back into the habit of taking 30 at a time. You do need to be mentally committed, and you may fail, but as you see the count going down it reinforces the progress you are making.
So that is my experience, and i was counted as a hardcore user, i was spending $30 a day on these tablets, for 6 years. It can be done, and it can be done without anyone else knowing, i even worked all this time during the taper and performed all things as i should, it did not interfere with me life as cold turkey did. It takes longer (4 weeks), but its pain free. :)
If i can do it, you can too. Its not hopeless.
