Did you really intend to sound so condescending in this post? Have you ever been on an antidepressant? When you're prescribed these types of drugs it's because you would stand to benefit from them. No one should refuse to take something that would better their mental state based on weight gain. You make it sound like if they'd known they would gain weight they could've avoided taking the drug altogether. That simply isn't the case.

I was on celexa for three years and i am 20 years old. Before celexa i weighed in at 143 and towards the end, i weighed 189lbs. The weight gain didn't help with the depression, and just made me feel crummier about my body image. Finally decided to stop taking them a year ago. A year later i now weigh 136 lbs with no dieting or excersize. It did take a few months to really start to notice the significant change.

I have been on Clexa for 8 mos. I have gained about 15 lbs and am so upset. I can eat an then an hour later I am hungry again and it takes larger portions to satisfy my appetite. I tried cutting all carbs, increasing my exercise and the wt still keeps getting higher.
I am 5'7" and always been thin, now I am fat and depressed thinking that in a week I will have to buy a whole new wardrobe and I dread putting on a bathingsuit...I am weening off this drug and pray I drop the weight fast...I would rather be less chill and have my figure back than to be super chill and fat...please wish me luck.

So glad to have read this thread. I was on citalopram for a year and 7 mos and I gained approximately 45 lbs! Started at 30 mg and went down to 20. No one could believe how different I looked. I recently stopped taking it and I am hoping the weight will come off as fast as I gained it. It has been 2 weeks (cold turkey). I felt great at first. Now I hve really scary mood swings.. very angry, headaches as well.

Your story is very similar to mine. I just found out about the weight gain connection with celexa and am weaning off starting today! Have you had any luck with weight loss?

I was on celexa Ativan for like two years. I mind you I found my self suffering from addiction with the Ativan. I stopped taking celexa by drinking alcohol then. It went all bad I gained 80 pounds. It was a really tough ride. I been off all pills a little over a year. Stopped drinking in December. I weighed myself and lost 40 pounds. It's alot I suggest don't get on pills unless u have to.

I was on Celexa for about 5 years and gained 40 pounds. I’ve always weighed between 105 and 110. Gaining weight to 150 caused so much anger and sadness I was constantly in this horrible state. I had zero energy and I ate so much sugar, I just couldn’t seem to satisfy this constant hunger! I started exercising and eating as many vegetables as I could and still no weight loss. I went off celexa about 3 months ago and the change has been amazing. I’ve lost 11 pounds and had so much more energy! The withdrawal was miserable - anger, migraines, dizziness and little ‘brain zaps’. Getting through it was worth it! I’m so angry with my psychiatrist for not listening to my complaints all along.

Hi all, I was on 10 mg of Citalopram for about seven months, and in the last two noticed a steady and quick weight gain. I switched to 10mg of lexapro hoping that would help, then gained another five in two weeks. I’ve been between 115 and 125 since high school in 2007. I’ve always watched what I ate and exercised regularly, and have always managed my weight well. Never the need for dieting or intense gym. I went from 115 in May to 140 now. I took 5mg of lexapo for two weeks and this is my second week without an SSRI. I’m significantly more moody with an often upset stomach. I’m also really watching what I’m eating and doing cardio and weight training five times a week andthe scale hasn’t budged. I’ve read elsewhere that SSRIs can permanently damage your metabolism. Hoping to hear some positive news with weight loss once going off cital/lexapro!
