Your story mirrors mine and i am anxiously awaiting my 1 year mark of being med free to see if anything changes. Thank u to all people writing on here because others don't understand and say it is not possible. They think I am hiding in closets eating pies. I cannot believe someone knowingly put me on this and told me, "it does not cause weight gain."
Good luck to everyone.
Good luck to everyone.

This is exactly what has happened to me. Except I was only ever on 20 msg. Within 3 months I gained 15 lbs. I am meticulous about diet and exercise and don't fluctuate much in weight normally. The weight gain happened so quickly - all in my stomach and hips despite doubling up on my crunches and workouts. I quit cold turkey about a week and a half ago and it seems like I'm still gaining even though I'm being so careful and working out extra. Very depressing. I'm going to have to cut back even more it sounds like ... :-/ growl. :(

I gained 40 pounds while taking effexor and trazadone! I have been off my meds for two months and the scale has not budged to spite my eating a clean diet and have very little appetite. I have been told I will never lose the weight because my metabolism was destroyed. I am devastated. I was always thin and now I cannot fit into my clothes. This makes me even more depressed. My psychiatrist knew I was formerly anorexic and guaranteed I would not gain weight on effexor!

Initially you lose weight. Out of no where it catches up to you. Two years into it I have gained 40 pounds. Every SSRI makes you gain weight eventually. Oh, and good luck losing it!

I am now following this closely. I have been gaining and gaining and gaining for the years I have been on Celexa (I want to say 5, but I would have to verify that). I am now up 30lbs. Some of that is muscle mass as I have started working with a trainer, but it seems like every time I start to lose weight through diet and exercise, I mysteriously gain five more lbs (not muscle, just inches of belly fat). I have gone up several sizes just in the last few months in fact. I watch my diet and I do exercise, so this is INCREDIBLY frustrating to me. Like many of you, I have tapered (though not enough) and finally given up on the citalopram. I have only been off a couple of weeks, but I am very anxiously awaiting a subsidence in the withdrawal symptoms (weepy and dizzy) and I hope to start seeing some weight loss. Thanks to all of you who have shared your stories. If I start to see weight loss, I will post it here.

Not sure if you'll get back on here to check this, but if you do - how did this go for you? I made the same switch and put on a LOT more weight very quickly. I'm now trying to wean off Cymbalta. Hate all this weight gain!!

I was on Celexa for almost exactly a year. I put on a good 30 lbs. It wasn't until about a month ago I had someone tell me it could be from the Celexa. So I quit cold-turkey. It was just for anxiety, I figured the withdrawals were worth finding out if that was it. It totally was - my appetite is gone compared to when I was on it. The withdrawals were killer though - dizziness, nausea, stomach pains, anxiety, shakes, etc. I found that Pepto Bismol helped with almost everything! As for the weight loss - I've lost 6 lbs so far not doing anything. I did buy a treadmill today because I'm determined to get it all off, and exercise actually helps more with the symptoms than Celexa did, so win-win. Honestly the biggest help for me was feeling full again, finally!

Vitamin B12 and B9, vitamin D and magnesium! These have helped alleviate my depression symptoms and allowed me to stop celexa! With no side effects!

Have you tried Wellbutrin XL? I have recently gotten off of Celexa but started Welburtrin and the weight I gained with Celexa is starting to come off. I've lost about 6 lbs in the past 3 weeks.

I actually was on cymbalta first and gained a lot of weight with it. I did a lot of research and though Id give the Celexa a try, and now find myself weaning off of it because im just as big. I was soo mad that i couldn't lose the weight after Cymbalta and now and just as big , i have been weaning off about a week now and no weight loss. Cymbalta does have the opposite affect for some, just not me:(

I wad on citolapram for about year. At firSt I lost 5 pounds but then noticed my stomach and hips became fatter eventhough I weighed less. I also suffered from severe constipation and heartburn while taking it. When I first quit taking citolapram I felt extremely dizzy and ill. My headache was unbearable and my brain felt shocks of pain periodically. I tried to exercise to help get the drug out of my body. After the first week I felt much better and now feel back to normal having been off for 3 weeks. I hope this helps and my heart goes out to those who are suffering these awful side effects. I truly wish I'd never taken it and found that dealing with my anxiety through meditation is far more effective.

I was on cymbalta for 9 months and gained 40 pounds. I have never been this big in my life. I have gone up and done with my weight by 5 or 10 pounds but not this much. I have been off it for about 4 months and cannot get the weight off no matter what I do. It could be different for you but just sharing my experience. Hope it helps. Ps: it took me about 4 months into taking it to gain all the weight.
