I was on Prozac about 8 years, Started to gain weight, well the Dr informed me it was hormones, weight gain was 25- lbs; wow!!! ; however I was always thin in my 20's 100-105; in the first 5 years of the thirties was avg, 110-115; weight staring coming on, Had a hysterectomy and about anothther 10 more lbs... Dr, said you are older that what happens.!
Well I thought this is crazy, I exercise 3-4 times a week watch what I eat.. a lot small meal, fruit ,Veg, How could I be gaining weight??
My prozac dose was 20mg, then increase to 2x times a day = 40mg,.. Went to a new Dr. he said that my does was to low, if you increase the dosage you will lose weight, so I went to 60 mg a day, that seemed to work and I lossed about 15lbs of weight. Went to the Dr for another check up, and the Dr said to jump my metabolism to lose more weight . I needed to take 80 mg a day; 40mg in am and 40mg in the evening..
Well I lost 30 lbs in about 3 months; Wow!! he said studies have shown taking Prozac at a higher dose will aid in weight loss! I had to still follow an exercise program and low calorie meal plan...
I was thrilled, now the kicker: I got off the Prozac, Jan 12,2010 and in one month I gained 10 lbs!!! That's a lot in 4 weeks, I eating a low calorie diet still working out 3x4 times week.. this is crazy!!
Has any one else experienced this problem. Any feed back would be great!!
Afraid to get back on Prozac, I could gain more weight..

It has to be the anti depressants causing the weight gain. I have been on prozac for 6 months with combined with birth control (yasmin) to manage my anxiety. I have gained over 10 lbs which is a lot as I'm only 5 feet tall. I have been dieting and training very hard for my upcoming triathlon and still the weight will not shift.
I've decided to come off the Prozac as the weight is becoming too much to carry. I will try other methods to control my anziety.

I am really comforted by all the comments related to weight gain and anti-depressants. I have been on Cipralex for a number of years - as well as its' predecessor Celexa. I never really took any great notice of the weight gain and that it might be as a consequence of anti-depressants. I was totally focused ont he mental benefits derived, and there is no doubt they are there. Then, nearly two years ago I went through quite a life change on many levels - but continued with the anti-depressants. Frankly, I was really fearful of giving them up and didn't want to go back to the mental state I was in before. About a month ago I decided that I felt capable of trying to reduce my anti-depressant intake, and gradually get off them altogether using my will power to help me keep myself under control.
By this time I knew I was about 30 lbs overweight - about 220 instead of about 190. It never did make me tie the anti-depressants to the weight issue until a couple of days ago when my wife noted I had lost weight. That really puzzled me because I had not been trying anything diffeent than the usual things to keep my weight under some control. Then it twigged - the only thing I have really changed was to are reduce my anti-depressants to about a third of where I was. So is that it? I think it may be!
