I am reaching out to share my VERY odd experience following a D&C surgical abortion. I have not found any stories of anybody experiencing this specific situation, which does not make sense to me, so I am seeing if anybody else could help me figure this out.
I had my first ultrasound at 6 weeks following what I thought was a miscarriage. One day while expecting my period, a rush of blood had come out heavy and fast. I had never been pregnant before, but I knew this wasn't normal for my period. The first thing I thought was that I had a miscarriage very early. Turns out, the baby had a strong heart beat and was 0.5 cm, but there was a 1.8 x 0.7 size Subchorionic Hemorrhage. I guess it could have been from this hemorrhage or implantation bleeding. The bleeding had continued until deciding to end my pregnancy at 8.5 weeks.
I went to Planned Parenthood for a D&C. Post procedure, everything seemed fine and I went to the recovery room and noticed some normal bleeding on my pad. I went home, rested and had very slight spotting. I felt fine the night of and day after the surgery.
Day 3, I have pelvic cramps and stomach pains and bloating. I had diarrhea for the whole day but my stomach felt like it was very full. I felt like I had trapped gas or something, and the pelvic cramps got worse. I couldn't even button my jeans that whole day and I never felt like that pregnant!

The next day, the diarrhea stopped and the pain was gone. That night (Monday following procedure, 4 days later) I went to the bathroom to pee and when I wiped myself, I was shocked in disbelief. The fetus/embryo (mid development) came out of me in one piece! It looked exactly how it would look transforming to fetus between 8 and 9 weeks. There was a head with facial profile developing, the body was in a clear-ish, hard ball with the yolk sack and umbilical visibly attached. I knew this was not just tissue as tissue does not have whites of an eye & a developing mouth. I had sent a picture to my regular OBGYN and a couple of people to confirm I wasn't hallucinating because this was so surprising. Others confirmed my eyes were not playing tricks on me.
After that, I had mild bleeding for a couple of hours. I did not bleed for 2 days, then suddenly had heavier bleeding again, which stopped now for about 24 hours. I have random, off and on intermittent bleeding which I was told can be normal. It has been a week now and physically I do not feel any pain or any bloat. I am more haunted with the image in my head of what I had seen.
Both Planned Parenthood and nurses of my doctor's office seem confused. The nurses at my doctors asked me if I was sure I had the surgery.. Yes, of course! I was awake! My mother said her hair dresser had also had this same exact thing happen to her. I have never heard of this and nobody else I know has had this happen or heard of this either. I have found nothing about this online either. If anybody has ANY knowledge to this situation, suggestions, or even guesses as to what happened I am all ears.
I will say this though: If it were a twin that did not have a heart beat that could be seen at my first ultrasound at 6 weeks, how did it grow to what looked like development of between 8/9 weeks? My boyfriend does not have twins on his side and my aunt on my moms side had twins, but those are the ONLY set of twins on my side. I know it can happen, but can it grow past the time the heart stops? I wouldn't think so.
I have a retroverted uterus/it's tilted backwards but I was told the woman performing the procedure this and she said it's pretty common. The ultrasound tech told me this as she had to still do an internal ultrasound.
Thank you for reading this.
As for the procedure itself: I was moderately sedated, and they used novacaine to numb my cervix. It was really quick, but I remember the whole thing and definitely felt the clamp. It wasn't terrible, but if I hadn't had a driver with me they would not have done the sedation and I KNOW it would have been if I wasn't sedated. Please take the sedation and have somebody pick you up. The procedure itself is very, very quick. Expect to be there for about 5 hours total
