I had a lap Nissen procedure done about 8-9 yrs ago, for a paraesophagel herni, a mesh wrap was used.  Went to the doctor for a barium swallowing test 4-5 yrs ago, found that it took then one swallow for the normal amount of fluid to go down. Today I am able to burp and sometimes loudly.  My issue is that a 3-4 months ago my neck/throat started getting sore and having to clear my throat. Then I started feeling like I had something in my throat. Today, I have a constant feeling of a string in my throat and when I try to lay down to sleep I start coughing and have to use a cough drop to ease it.  Could the string I feel be from the mesh?

Hi, guest.

Your symptoms and history of a laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication with mesh placement for a paraesophageal hernia are important to consider in evaluating your current throat and neck issues. The procedure you underwent is typically done to treat severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or hernias and involves wrapping the top part of the stomach around the lower esophagus to strengthen the sphincter that prevents acid reflux.

It's not uncommon for patients who have undergone Nissen fundoplication to experience changes in their ability to belch or vomit, as well as altered sensations in their throat or esophagus. However, these changes usually occur soon after surgery, not several years later.

This sensation, medically referred to as "globus sensation," can be caused by a variety of factors including GERD, throat inflammation, stress, or other gastrointestinal issues. It's less likely to be directly caused by the mesh itself, especially if the surgery was several years ago.

While complications from surgical mesh are possible, they typically present with symptoms like pain, swelling, or infection. The sensation of a string in the throat is not a common symptom of mesh complications, but it's not impossible.

If it's been several years since your last barium swallow test, and your symptoms have changed or worsened, it might be beneficial to have another evaluation. This test can help assess how well your esophagus is functioning and whether there are any obstructions or abnormalities.

Hope this helps a bit.
