Ok, I'll cut to the chase. I am probably going to have a pain pump installed due to numerous back problems. The research I have done indicates or seems to indicate a direct link to morphine that has preservatives in it to a condition called granulomas. ( a mass that grows with serious ramifications at the drip site). I have discovered that the compounders (those that do the mixing) are sometimes at fault for this. I have also discovered that there is a preservative free morphine. After discussing these issues with my doctor he tends to lean to the belief that the granulomas appear to be more prevelant with those that are using higher doses of morphine. After researching the available meds that can be injected into the pump and reading others input, it appears that dilaudid has less side effects and is preservative free, which is what I am leaning to as the choice for the pain pump. My question is open to all but would greatly appreciate any doctors input. I am currently not on any pain medication however I have reached the end of my rope regarding what I can tolerate and I invite anyone that has went this route and their outcome. Thanks.

Just to be curious, are you going to be using a large amount of morphine since you are concerned about getting granulomas? I think that it would be helpful to know about that beucase I tend to agree with what your doctor has said from what I know about morphine and preservatives. Let me know. Thanks!

I wouldn’t recommend a pain pump to anyone. Too many issues. I was happy with mine, had three put in. Then 2020 after a fill the catheter shredded and I ended up with a Heart attack. I started having trouble walking in Oct 2021. My knees were bone on bone, so had knee surgery 1/22. Had rehab could not walk or stand. 4/22 I’m now lower paraplegia. Neuro ordered mri Brain and cat scan of thoracic spine (hemiangioma) possible at catheter site.
