My father is 61 years old and it looks like his life will change for the worse form now on. He has been scheduled for abdominoperineal colostomy and as I understood, after that he will be subdued to permanent colostomy. Is that the only option after that procedure? I mean, can something else be done?

Unfortunately, I don’t think there is any other possibility. Removing the lower parts of the intestinal system is leaving no choice but making some artificial path for excreting the body’s wastes. Lymph nodes might also be removed in order to prevent the spreading of the cancer. And you should know there are many support groups that deal with the situation after the surgery.
