Hello.
I recently just got put on birth control a little over two weeks ago, and I am taking Kariva, the 28 day pack. I read the instructions carefully and began taking the pill the 1st day of my period (like my gynocologist suggested)... My pill packet said that if I begin taking my 1st pill on day 1 of my period then i do not need any other form of birth control.. This didnt really seem right to me, because I had always heard that it takes a long time for birth control to be effectively in your system. However, stupidly, on day 2 of my pill, my boyfriend and i had unprotected sex and he ejaculated inside me (thinking we were okay). We've done that a couple times since then, and, now about 2 and a half weeks later, ive been getting sick to my sthomach and almost everything makes me sick. I'm hoping that this is just a side effect of beginning birth control, but since me and my boyfriend have been having unprotected sex and hes been ejaculating in me, i'm afraid that the pill isn't really in my system yet and that i may in fact pregnant.. Any help or advice please would be greatly appreciated.... Thanks!

I am from the old bc school i guess. I was always told to use alternate protection for the first month of starting bc.
Now i am learning that you can be protected within the week or less.
If you read the packet instructions and it said that your protected after the first pill while on your period, then i would say your not pregnant.
Like you suggested, you may be not feeling well due to the bc. When do you take them? If you are taking them in the morning, try switching to just before you go to bed at nite. If this continues after switching the times, you may want to call Dr. for a consult. Sometimes we have to go thru 2 or 3 different types of bc before we finally hit on the one that agrees with us the best. This is quite normal and don't be afraid to continue to talk to your Dr. if your not happy with different kinds bc.
Also, if you notice some spotting, it would probably be break thru bleeding. This happens often while on the pill. Don't panic, once again it's just the simple matter of finding that perfect pill for you. Often enough, the break thru bleed will stop on it's own.

Yes I do take them at 830pm each night because it fits easier with my schedule.. However last week (after having unprotected sex) i accidentally took the pill a couple hours late. im nervous that could make the pill less effective.. it was only 2-3 hrs later than my normal scheduled time that i took my pill, but i guess im just a little worried about the effectiveness..

Give or take an hour or two either way should be no big deal for you.
The problem would begin if you failed to take 2 or 3 pills in a row. Not only would you start a period, but the protection from the bc would slip.

so, my symptoms keep getting worse it seems as each day passes.. im the most moody ive ever been in my life (and not under any large amounts of stress), im sick, i cant eat hardly, the smell of certain foods make me sick. and im worried that i am in fact pregnant. im cramping and having lower back aches but im not due for my period for another week, and i feel bloated. Im HOPING this is just a side effect of the pill, but because ive been a little careless, im nervous. anyone else experiencing similar symptoms? any kinda advice would help. thanks!

The first thing you need to do is try to relax. I know it's easy for me to say as i am on the other end of your dilemma.
You have another week to go before you get your period, right?? Just ride it out until then. I think that your probably getting yourself into such a frenzy that your making yourself sick. Remember, stress can delay your period, so try to relax a little and see what next week brings. If you don't get your period 2 to 3 days after your placebo pills (inactive ones) i would probably check in with your Doctor. This could all be due to that particulatr pill not agreeing with you.
If you followed your Dr.s advice and read the instructions, don't worry right now. Being a few hours late in taking your pill does not mean that your pregnant. Keep checking in and let us know how your doing, and in the mean time, please calm down.
